So - rules are there are no rules, no insider footballer info needed - it's just who you think will win, lose or draw - like Paul the octopus in the last World Cup - this is using the brilliance of gransnetters (and CariGransnet's goldfish - named Goldie, of course) to predict who will win the World Cup.

Every morning we post the fixtures for that day for you to post your predictions.

You'll get a point for each correct prediction (win, lose or draw) and for those with a competitive streak, there will be a bonus points option suggested for the day, so you 'fancy' up your entry <ooh>

Every morning we will update our leaderboard, however you're more than welcome to join in at whatever stage. Obviously there's less chance of winning if you join in half-way, unless you're a pro and take part in the bonus rounds!

There will be a mystery prize for the gransnetters with the most points at the end of the World Cup (13 July).

Let the games commence! Post below if you'll be taking part from Thursday.

My fact about Argentina is that there are more than 50,000 Argentinian Patagonians who claim Welsh descent, and up to 12,000 people there speak Patagonian Welsh as their first language, with around 25,000 having it as their second language.

Argentina and USA to win

Argentina has been the place where some of the oldest and largest fossils of dinosaurs have been unearthed.

The first version of the Star Spangled Banner had 13 stripes and 13 stars

It was interesting to hear last night that the Muslim players were being allowed to eat and drink in the daytime [with it being Ramadan at the moment]. Visions of them all running off the pitch for a Mars Bar the minute the sun goes down confused.I wonder if the names of the players will be added to the 'approved list' if the Swiss win the Cup?

rubysong Tue 01-Jul-14 13:52:52

Argentina and USA to win.

In Grass Valley, California (USA) there are two bakeries producing Cornish pasties.
Swiss babies must be named from a government approved list.

Belgians drink an average of around 80 litres of beer per person per year and Americans around the same. I find this interesting as Belgium produces so many interesting varieties of beer and the Americans I’ve met think you’re a hardened drinker if you order a second half. grin

The figure is 43 litres for Argentina and 58 for Switzerland.

I think I'll go for Argentina to win and the USA. football

I'll go for Argentina and Belgium to win.

I have been to 3 of the countries but not Argentina...

Adelboden, Switzerland is the home of "Our Chalet", a hostel in the Swiss Alps belonging to the Guide (now jointly with the Scouts) association. It has been an adventure holiday base for Guides since 1932. I have never holidayed there but did have a family holiday in Adelboden when I was a child - my first encounter with "continental quilts"!!

Bruges, Belgium is one of my favourite places for a short break. The city centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site, but I love it for the Moules Frites and, of course, the chocolate.

Charleygirl Tue 01-Jul-14 12:02:36

Switzerland and USA to win I hope.

kittylester Tue 01-Jul-14 10:30:42

Maria Eva Duarte Peron died in 1952 aged just 33. She was the second wife of President Juan Peron and much loved by the Argentinian people.

The US is the birth place of the icon that is Dolly Parton who was a huge hit at Glastonbury this year.

Hope they will do as I've got a busy day. I have been to Switzerland and Belgium. grin

Last two matches for the second round today...

Argentina v Switzerland 5pm BBC1
Belgium v US 9pm ITV

And for your bonus points, tell us a fact about one of the countries per fixture (and not that you haven't been to that country grin)

kittylester Mon 30-Jun-14 20:13:30

Maggie grin

The only thing I know about childcare in any of the countries listed (I'm wayyyy past child care worries myself) is what my 'extra' daughter tells me about her Nigerian MiL's attitude which is to give the squalling child to one of the maids and go out! Extra daughter is horrified by this especially as her DH wants to take the children to see his mother without his wife. shock

Maggiemaybe Mon 30-Jun-14 20:00:41

Right, I've posted on the Nick Clegg thread, twice, once on flexible working, once on childcare in Germany. Can I have a nice lie-down now please? grin

kittylester Mon 30-Jun-14 15:03:49

France and Germany to win!

Could you ask more simple questions next time please?

The window cleaner turned up this morning and offered to do inside as well as out confused, I've been out for lunch, Andy's on in a minute and now you want me answer questions about child care!

Crumbs! this is GN after all, which implies that we need a rest every now and again! grin

Tegan Mon 30-Jun-14 14:58:32

I've just got back from me hols and am now aiming for last place. Got a bit upset about Englands poor show and am disappointed that Holland won under such controversial circumstances so am now supporting France [for Thierry [heart emoticom]].

France and Germany to win.

I have posted on the thread, but have no real idea of our childcare system any more let alone that of other countries. I should think that France and Germany have good systems in place for those who can afford it and that Nigeria and Algeria conform to my ideal of the mother running the home and caring for the children with the support of the extended family and the father working to pay the bills!!

Maggiemaybe Mon 30-Jun-14 12:40:36

Oh dear, I'm losing touch with the leaderboard leader! I'll go for the obvious today please - France and Germany. I'll get my political hat on later!

And for your bonus points, let us know what you think about extending flexible working for all employees on this thread: www.gransnet.com/forums/in_the_news/1208425-Nick-Clegg-event-on-family-friendly-working-TODAY And how you think our childcare system fares compared to one of the countries playing today's games.

Sorry, no chance to predict today as I was running around like a fly with a blue derrière, doing a barbecue for the members of DH's rock band (don't laugh) and their families. There were only 15 people but they ate like gannets, I hardly got anything, not even nibbles, well one nut but not a single Pringle! I did get some pudding and now they've all gone I have finished off a last hot dog.
Hopper to get back to the predicting next time.

kittylester Sun 29-Jun-14 16:47:35

I have reviewed the Babylonia Restaurant in Leicester which is Greek - phew!!

Maggiemaybe Sun 29-Jun-14 16:40:19

Good afternoon. Hope you've all had a little bit of {sunshine] to enjoy today.

I've reviewed the Cielo Blanco Mexican restaurant in the Trinity Centre and The Living Room cocktail lounge in Greek Street, both Leeds. Not too creative, I'm afraid - I'm starting to think that too much of my life revolves round eating and drinking!

And as for the football I'll take a punt on Mexico and Costa Rica to win today, please.

kittylester Sun 29-Jun-14 16:39:17

Netherlands and Costa Rica to win for me too please.

I have done a review of the Keukenhof Bulbfields and the Mexican restaurant in Loughborough. [thickemoticon]

Well I've had a busy weekend!!

If I get chance I will do a review of something Greek - which might have been The Island if Pittcity hadn't beaten me to it!!

Pittcity Sun 29-Jun-14 13:51:56

Netherlands and Costa Rica to win.

Easier to write reviews for this one as I have actually eaten here and read this book...

I have added a review on Amigos Mexican Restaurant, Colchester in Eating Out and one on The Island by Victoria Hislop, which is set in a Greek leper colony in Adult Books.
