Here at GNHQ we're interested in finding out more about what our users think about the upcoming EU referendum. On the 23rd June 2016, there will be a referendum to decide whether the UK should remain a member of the European Union, or whether we should leave it.

This survey is open to all gransnetters who are eligible to vote in UK general elections. Everyone who completes the survey will be put into a prize draw where one gransnetter will win a £100 store voucher (winner can pick from our list of suppliers).

Here's the link: www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/SF9TDW3

Thanks
GNHQ

done (i think), in my humble opinion the Economy will fall in deep if we leave and YES, immigration is an issue, but the good thing here is it's low qualified labor and we do miss that

purplerosie wins the £100 voucher - thanks all!

Did our parents not vote in the last referendum?
I can't recall thinking they were too old to vote. We all live in this country. What happens will affect us all, not just our children and grandchildren.

Katkin Tue 03-May-16 16:57:59

We old people should not be allowed to vote on our children's and grandchildrens future. What expertise do we have? Our children have been in the u nion all their lives, we have no right to decide their future. I expect most old people will selfishly vote out so I am voting in.

survey all done.......

Done! I listened to the politicians in '75 and was scared to death so voted IN. Oh boy did I get that one wrong! Has anyone noticed that the arguments are the same regurgitated ones we had then? We need the security; the rise of Russia; freedom of movement was an ideal; we couldn't strike a trade deal alone etc., etc. Let me oooout!

Bellsmeadow6 Sun 01-May-16 20:15:10

I think we should remain in the EU - I believe that together we stand divided we fall. We have a voice together with the other members of the EU. On our own we would struggle - have to think of worldwide terrorism e.g. we need the support of the EU.

OUT! Even though the only political party I have respect for, wants to stay in, I want out as soon as possible.

SES905 Sun 01-May-16 10:00:16

Entered. Stay in...

Lesevans6 Sun 01-May-16 09:55:45

I voted in the last referendum. At that time the Politicians kept going on about the Common Market, remember previous to this we always had shortages. The politicians were hiding the true facts, I have since found out that it was the Americans pushing not just us but all in Europe.
Anyway now I would like to vote out from my heart, but at the age of 70 I also have to think of my sons who both have financial jobs. So my head says I will not be around much longer but hopefull my Children and Grandchildren will, I hate to say it but I think their long time future is in the EEC. I could go on and on but what is the point.

The Brexit brigade have given out snippets of tantalising or worrying ideas, none of which have swayed me. Much of the Brexit strategy is pure conjecture and wishful thinking.

I am vehemently in, despite not being entirely happy with the EU. There is no perfect solution but staying 'in' seems the best of the options on offer.

Perhaps my strongest reason for staying in is the fact that we have not fought a European war since 1945. Yes, I understand there have been wars within Europe but none that really involved our country. Look to the previous few hundred years and we were fighting (e.g. dying) all the time...

As an oldie should I really gamble with my grandchildren's future and job prospect, also consider imposing closed borders in Europe upon them? Leaving the EU would not happen immediately, but job prospects and lack of investment could be really disastrous.
No I have no right to take such a gamble at my time of life. Therefore I shall vote for status quo, staying in. I desire a safer Eurupe and not the small minded Nationalism that brought about WW1 & WW2.

I also fear for the UK also if the English know best for the UK attitude so often heard in these columns, creates such a divide we then see the start of the break up of the UK.

Why take such stupid risks at our time of life?

Sillyoldfool If it's not us, there will be another.

Sillyoldfool Fri 22-Apr-16 17:34:41

If we dont get out of the EU I really fear for this country & the future of my grandchildren. There is no democracy in the EU, we have no real inluence, there will be no reformation. The best hope is that the whole thing will crumble eventually.

Roses, I apologise. I have realised that you only posted once on this thread.
I checked last night, after I wrote that comment.
Unfortunately my apology would not upload last night.

Niggly, is this not a ridiculous comment?

"That's as maybe dj, but I think most people are familiar with your views without having them repeated ad nauseam, which lets face it, is a tad tedious!!!"

I thought we were supposed to write about the subject rather than the person.
At least I do that. On this page alone there are three people who have only written comments attacking me. Why? Is it that you do not have anything sensible to say about the EU?

nigglynellie Fri 22-Apr-16 11:27:38

OH dj, I think you outpost me about ten to one, so that was a pretty ridiculous comment!! Let's face it at times you do go on and on with endless repetition, not just once or twice!!

durhamjen Fri 22-Apr-16 01:42:13

I'll give up posting repetitive views when you do, niggly.
Actually we have lots of new posters who might not have heard my views before.
There are lots of people on here who have commented more than once, so why just attack me for it, roses?
I'd be surprised if you weren't one of them.

M0nica Thu 21-Apr-16 22:10:47

MaizieD, I know it is no longer relevant, but you could have filled in the survey but just not aded your details at the end so that you were not in the draw for the Amazon voucher.

I never put any personal details on a questionnaire so regularly turn down the opportunity to win prizes from all sources. I know many marketing companies run survey like this to harvest contact details for marketing lists. I hasten to add that I do not think that is what Gransnet does, but once you start giving information here but not there, there is a chance you will get it wrong sometime, so I try to be consistent. No name, no entry in prize draw.

Granddaughter Thu 21-Apr-16 09:07:04

I have been rather reluctant to express my own views because of the attitude of a few individuals who express rude comments and prejudices to other people's views. However, in view of the lack of understanding of human rights I decided to take such a risk. So here goes:

A great deal of rubbish as been promoted by the Out brigade and their Media friends about EU Legal and human rights. I agree the EU does have a strong commitment to human rights, preventing discrimination and the due process of law. This naturally makes the EU attractive to countries, such as the likes of the Ukraine who also wish to share in similar legal and human rights. WW1 & 2 was mainly fought to defeat the oppression of fascist states in Europe and their oppression of human rights. OK some extremists escape the net of UK laws because of flaws in some parts of our UK laws in respect of deportment, which the EU courts have not upheld, but our human rights laws to support individuals, the disabled and vulnerable in society is however well worth suffering a few flaws.
The stronger consumer laws that tend to strangle the monopolies and cartels unfair trading schemes of international business and financial institutions as well as energy and mobile businesses are well worthy of our protection. UK consumers laws do not offer same protection. In fact English law does not provided the strong consumer protection for older people that every other part of the UK enjoys, having been introduced by older people commissioners in NI and Wales and the Scottish parliament. Rather highlights our own English politicians negative attitude to consumer protection laws for older people, so we,have a much higher rate of scams in England than any other part of the U.K. I shall vote to stay in the EU

nigglynellie Thu 21-Apr-16 07:08:56

That's as maybe dj, but I think most people are familiar with your views without having them repeated ad nauseam, which lets face it, is a tad tedious!!!

durhamjen Wed 20-Apr-16 22:50:31

The views on the survey are the ones in the prize draw.
You two really ought to read more carefully.

Granny23 Wed 20-Apr-16 21:55:19

A small point perhaps but my sister, who has just returned from a river cruise up the Danube, was told by a member of the boat's crew that if Britain left the EU & therefore the Schengin (sp?) agreement passengers would have to clear customs at every border crossing with passport and cabin inspection. So in their case 5 times as well as at the airports - Edinburgh - Schipol - Vienna then return Budapest - Schipol - Edinburgh - making the trip a bureaucratic nightmare and unsustainable from the cruise line's point of view.

So, if a Rhine or Danube cruise is on your bucket list, better book it soon if the vote is 'out'.

rosesarered Wed 20-Apr-16 21:24:50

You were only supposed to put your views ONCE on here djen grin

Ana Wed 20-Apr-16 16:04:19

Certain people are going to have a distinct advantage in the prize draw!

petra Wed 20-Apr-16 15:39:24

I for one will be proud to queue in the non Eu queue.
