JustineBGransnet (GNHQ) Wed 25-Jul-18 15:42:42

We know you're probably thinking about summer holidays, long evenings in beer gardens and the hottest summer since the 1970s, but some people are starting to think about Christmas (yes, really!) and we'd like to hear your thoughts around Christmas.

This survey is open to all UK GNers who celebrate Christmas, and all who complete the survey will be entered into a prize draw where one GNer will win a £50 voucher for the store of their choice (from a list).

Click here to complete the survey.

Thanks and good luck!

There are some things on this survey that I have never even heard of! Elf on the Shelf? - who he?

M0nica Wed 25-Jul-18 16:47:04

Likewise.

It's an American idea (of course wink) that's jumped across the pond. This is the official site. There are lots of "traditions" connected to the elf, including the one mentioned in the survey, of elves creepily reporting back to Father Christmas on a child's behaviour. Also lots of expensive accessories and geegaws to part you from your money.

We don't do any of that. I bought a couple of elf dolls a couple of years ago from Amazon for about £4 each (Tesco sell them now). From 1 December they appear in the DGC's houses every morning, doing something naughty (swinging off the Christmas tree, making snow angels in flour on a baking board, dipping a rod into the fish tank, etc). The little ones love looking for them every day, the parents get a little bit tired of the damn things and are glad when they disappear on Christmas Eve. smile

Grannyknot Wed 25-Jul-18 18:22:55

Got boring so didn't finish it ?

Marmight Thu 26-Jul-18 08:45:23

I used to be so excited about Christmas. then I grew up. I got excited again when I had children. Then they grew up. Now I have grandchildren I look in from the outside on their excitement but soon they will grow up. Sadly commercialism has taken over. I miss the sheer naivety and wonderment of Christmas. It ain't what it used to be hmm

What a nasty little survey.
Completely misnamed. 'How you celebrate Christmas?'
No.
How much are you likely to spend so we may target you in our advertising.
One reference only to any form of religious celebration: 'when you attend the first advent Service.'
Won't complete it.

Teetime Thu 26-Jul-18 09:19:25

I did it - I like thinking about Christmas as I will be spending it with my daughter and grandson.

Marthjolly1 Thu 26-Jul-18 09:55:45

I wish I could like Christmas. A big dark cloud surrounds me at the thought of it. The nearer to Christmas, the bigger the cloud gets. I wish I could run away and hide from November to January. I dont know when or why I started to feel this. I remember it used to be so much fun - a long time ago

mcem Thu 26-Jul-18 10:45:03

Wow! Could it be any more commercially based?
Not completing that!

jocork Thu 26-Jul-18 14:18:14

I struggle with the commercialisation of Christmas. I find preparation for Christmas stressful as I sing in church and also in a local choir so there are so many extra choir practices and concerts to do that there isn't time for everything else. Last year was great as I went to DS and DiL for Christmas so didn't have as much to do. As I was only having my daughter to stay for one night on her way between her dad's and her friends I didn't bother putting up decorations at all. I hope to be away at my daughter's this year so should be easier again apart from the travelling as she lives 400 miles away!

M0nica Thu 26-Jul-18 15:08:23

I love Christmas and believe it is only commercial if you let it be. I do not watch much tv so see very few of the Christmas adverts. Anything else in the commercial line goes over my head because I am not interested in it.

Each year we do the usual thing in the usual way. I can do it in my sleep. Same decorations, same menu, same traditions, some pre-Christmas ones for DH and I and for the family over the Christmas period. Most presents bought on line. Everyone seems to love it and so do I. It is all remarkably hassle free.

Synonymous Thu 26-Jul-18 16:32:16

Monica I could have written your post - and after I had completed the survey I thought that I (and my entire family) must be the marketing men's worst nightmare. grin

Why are they using non words as in obligated instead of obliged? confused

NanaandGrampy Thu 26-Jul-18 19:48:26

It’s not working !

Hilltopgran Sat 28-Jul-18 14:30:45

Can not believe we are talking of Xmas. I have joined in the antics of an Elf on the Shelf, the youngest DGC loved looking each morning to find him and the eldest the fun of re hiding him each day.

chris8888 Sat 28-Jul-18 17:57:17

Its too hot to think of christmas

Jalima1108 Sun 29-Jul-18 14:29:35

Well, I've put the sprouts on!!
smile

Was anyone else a Girl Guide? Be prepared!

Humbertbear Mon 30-Jul-18 07:56:55

Can’t be bothered to negotiate the questionnaire (what is the point of it anyway). Since my DS and DiL decided they didn’t want to come to us on Xmas Day we have been going away to a rented cottage at the seaside and simply avoiding Xmas. My husband never enjoyed it, even as a child. We exchange small presents, drink champagne all day and have a good walk on the beach. The main meal will be pizza or a curry! We see the GC when we get home and they are given money and a book.
