The end of a 40 year relationship.

It's my decision to end it, but after all these years it's a tough decision. OK, on the face of it we've been good friends, almost inseparable for many, many years, but I've finally seen the light and realised that I'm just being taken for a mug.

Whenever we get together, much as I enjoy it, it's me that always pays, and I just can't afford it any more.

Now that I have made the decision, I feel I can also tell you a few home truths. You make a mess wherever you go, and, to be brutally honest, you smell.

So, you might have already taken the hint as although you have always been a daily visitor, the door remained closed to you yesterday.

Don't even think about trying to become part of my life again, I have a new friend now, OK, it's not a complete break away from you, but cheaper and less harmful.

So, after 40 years, it's over, cigarettes, you and I are finished.

Congratulations Phoenix, my DH smoked for 44 years, started when he was 16 and he gave them up 10 years ago.

I was and continue to be so proud of him, he did it all by himself, just one day out of the blue.

All the best,
mmm

Well done pheonix, one day at a time. My dad was on 40 a day in the 50's and 60's but never smoked another one when his eldest child was born. You can do it xx

Well done Phoenix ! My Mr P gave up 10 years ago , having been an 80 a day man. He now has the zeal of the convert regarding the habit grin. He used patches as vaping not around then. Just as well he gave up really, cannot imagine the cost of 80 a day at today's prices! Keep up the good work flowers

Well done for week 1 Pheonix . I too prefer to Vape now as it seems like a treat rather than an addiction . Some people are a bit sniffy about vaping I have found , almost as if I am cheating ! I am sure they wouldn`t be the same about me using a nicotine patch which is exactly the same . Well actually I am now vaping non nicotine flavours after gradually reducing the nicotine content over a few months . I am SO pleased with myself after so many failed attempts in the past . The house ,my clothes and hair doesn`t smell , which I was very aware of and I am better off financially . I haven't noticed any difference in my health even after 18 months but I never suffered from chest or breathing problems anyway. I guess the health benefits are silent ones ?
Keep it up it gets much easier after the second week xx

Well done, I just got up one morning 7 years ago and thought .. no more, and I haven't had a cigarette since, I still crave one now and then though. Good luck.

Indinana Fri 01-Apr-16 18:20:42

Well done phoenix - you're definitely not an April Fool!!! Now that you've managed a whole week without, I'm sure you won't give in .

And remember we're all behind you. If you feel yourself weakening, just come on here and shout HELP!!!

phoenix Fri 01-Apr-16 18:02:39

Well, one week on, and I haven't succumbed. Must be honest, there has been more than the odd moment when I have really craved a cigarette, but with the help of my vape thing, I have stayed strong!

So pleased for you Phoenix so many positive effects like more change in your pockets! And years to your life! wine

Stansgran the company that we have ordered our vape things from shows a saving of around £2,600 a year, based on a packet of cigarettes costing around £8.50 (they are more than that!) But allowing for buying the liquids, spare parts for the kit etc. That of course is for 1 person, with both Mr P and myself giving up, it should mean that we could afford all sorts of things! However for now it will just mean that the money goes a bit further.

Stansgran Sun 27-Mar-16 16:38:49

Good for you. A dear friend who smoked fairly non stop gave up but put the money she would have spent each week into a post office savings. She took both of them on a cruise at the end of the year. It's staggering how much it costs to burn money like that. I hated DH smoking . It cost to my knowledge £70 a week when he smoked and he has given up some years ago.

phoenix Digby needs exercises in movement from Tara who is more than twice his age. I have not seen her since 9am today.

phoenix Sun 27-Mar-16 16:12:07

hula-hoop I deliberately got rid of (for that read "smoked" ) all the cigarettes in the house to eliminate the temptation.

I decided that I was no longer prepared to go into a shop to buy a packet of cigarettes, hand over a £10 note and get a very small amount of change!

The government have had enough money out of me, plus the fact that they are hanging on to MY money, with regard to the state pension that I have paid into all my working life and now won't get for 8 years, well, they can jolly well sod off!

charleygirl don't forget he does also walk from the sofa to his biscuit bowl, although he does sometimes need a little sit down halfway across the kitchen floor. Not entirely sure if that's because he's tired, or forgotten what he was about to do!

hulahoop Sun 27-Mar-16 15:02:45

Well done p I gave up about 11yrs ago must have been ready said I was stopping and did I carried a open packet of ciggies for months telling myself I could have one if I wanted made me adamant I didn't need them I also had 100duty frees left gave them away in end ?

Charleygirl Sun 27-Mar-16 14:39:16

Digby's exercise plan is breathing!

phoenix Sun 27-Mar-16 14:36:52

tbugrin charleygirl I take your point, but unless we can get Digby on some sort of exercise plan, I fear he will always be a "heavy" something, bless him!

Liz46 posting about giving up was done deliberately, as I knew I would get great support and also a severe dressing down if I were to fall off the wagon, so to speak.

I know it's early days (only day 2, actually) but already I feel very positive about it, and sort of liberated! Plus choosing the flavours is good fun!

Mr P is about to order some more liquids, I have chosen a vanilla one, and Irish Cream. Some though, sound either very odd or positively disgusting, why on earth would anyone want to "smoke" rhubarb and custard or cornflakes?tbuconfused

Charleygirl Sun 27-Mar-16 14:03:51

Just think phoenix you will have two much healthier cats who will no longer be heavy passive smokers.

Liz46 Sun 27-Mar-16 13:03:09

Phoenix, you're not going to post in a few month's time asking for help in giving up Lidl's Cava are you? (just joking of course)

I think it was a good idea to advertise that you have given up the cigarettes as it might make you think twice if you get tempted. You would have to confess to us!

phoenix Sun 27-Mar-16 12:17:44

Mr P has now not had a cigarette for 3 weeks! He is on the vape thing too.

I have washed and put away the ashtrays and rounded up any stray lighters and put them in the bin.

rubysong I don't do any craft type things, but do enjoy crosswords & other word puzzles (can't see the point of sudoku though!).

I am avoiding the nibbles, as I really don't want to put on weight. We have just poured a pre-lunch glass of wine, and I thought that might be a bit of a struggle, but a few puffs on the vape and any thoughts of a cigarette vanished!

Did you know that 2 bottles of Lidl's Cava is actually cheaper than 1 packet of cigarettes??? tbushock

Charleygirl Sun 27-Mar-16 11:42:18

That is really good news phoenix. Does Mr.p smoke? Think of the fresh clean house you will be living in! You may not notice but others will.

rubysong Sun 27-Mar-16 11:37:09

Hope all goes well, Phoenix. Do you knit or do embroidery? (Anything to keep the hands busy and the mind occupied.) Get some nibbles in and perhaps a small glass of something. I would also say, if at all possible, keep away from other smokers for a while as they don't like one of their number giving up and may try and get you to smoke. Plan a lovely treat to spend all that surplus cash! My DSis was a heavy smoker and gave up many years ago. If she can do it so can you.

kassi Sun 27-Mar-16 11:31:55

Phoenix, I was in a similar situation. I too am now using a vape, and I made the transition easily 6 weeks ago. I have 2 vape things. At the moment , one has 'sherbet lemon' and the other has 'menthol', which was my cigarette of choice. I actually prefer the vaping to smoking. It's a sort of 'treat'. I haven't craved a cigarette at all, unlike previous failed attempts. Good luck to you!

Bellanonna Sun 27-Mar-16 11:02:32

An amusing post, and well done.

phoenix Sun 27-Mar-16 10:14:33

Thank you for your messages of support, they are appreciated!

I believe that if I can do one day (which I have) then I can do two. Not sure if I could do it without the vaper, but taking it one step at a time.

glammanana Sun 27-Mar-16 10:02:48

Well done you on your decision just think how much money you will save it does add up to such a large amount over the year.
Two ladies at work use the vape thingy's and they have a huge choice of flavours when they refill they get quite excited when picking a new flavour to try.Keep it up and best of luck hope all goes well for you.
