What attracted you to your partner.

These are all (well, nearly all) such lovely stores and many from people who don't often post. My story isn't so heartwarming, so won't share it - but I am happily single after a largely unhappy marriage, so no need for any sympathy smile

His eyes and his lovely smile. He was tall with lovely brown wavy hair and I was smitten. So was he fortunately although all his friends said he was a cradle snatcher.

Just the whole look - it was defo love at first sight as if I knew he was important. Married for 42 years with 2 sons and three grandchildren.

Theoddbird Tue 30-Aug-16 18:08:15

He made me laugh...Oh and I wanted to get away from my mother. It lasted 25 years... I would so love to fall in love with someone....maybe one day...

50 years ago, we worked in a large department store, he was so handsome, tanned, and fit, in a lovely Italian style suit, we went for a drink after work, he held my hand and has,nt let go since!!
We didn't have a car then so it was the bus everywhere, I loved the way he got off the bus first , then gave me his helping hand , I loved his manners, he knew how to treat a lady, and he knew his way round the wine list, , very important, I was 18years old he was 31 , the age gap has never bothered us , he is now 82 but looks 70' got all his hair but he,s now my silver fox,and I love him still.

Caretaker am I reading it correctly? Your friend's brother and his girlfriend came in. You told her, and him indirectly, that you would marry her. And you did. Did he not object? Not even a little bit?

I believe I have mentioned, that my late husband used to sit next to me in the bus, when I was attending the six form and he to college, until I wore fish net tights! When he first asked me out, I brought my cousin along with me!
We went our separate ways until I was 19 yrs of age, when I met him while waiting for the train when working in London. I didn't see him again until six months later, when I was waiting for our country bus back to my parent's house. I swung him around saying that I have been looking for him everywhere and he said the same, so it really started from there.

I walked into this room and saw the most handsome, kindest, loving man imaginable and fell in love straight away. I knew he was the only one for me - unfortunately he already had a girlfriend so I married his friend instead!....................

Met my gorgeous hubby at a dance class I still can't dance he was a teacher and we've been together over 38 years I have health probs and he really looks after me he is a star through and through xx

Rather embarrassingly, I liked his wife first! I went to a school event where I met them and she seemed really nice whilst he seemed to be a bit of a joker who didn't take anything seriously. Later it turned out she was seeing his childhood friend and couldn't say anything nice about her husband treating him like dirt. Meanwhile, I'd come to realise just how lovely and kind he was to her, the kids and me so when he came home unexpectedly to find her in a compromising position, we became closer. 23 years later I love him to bits and she is unhappily married to his friend.

Anzza Tue 30-Aug-16 16:40:09

His humour and his own self belief and dedication to his family. Laughed non stop on the first day I met him. 36 years later I'm not so amused but I equally amuse him, so we've laughed a lot over those years. ...We've had a fun, happy life together.

I went for a job, which I really needed, as I was bringing up 2 children on my own, anyway when I went in I knew I was going to get a second interview. He later told me why I didn't get the job as he wanted to see me again. Things progressed and we ended up getting marrieup and lived together for 33 years until he died of cancer in June this year, sadly missed very much

My husband was my final placement social work practice teacher before I qualified - it was his combination of firmness and tenderness toward difficult clients that did for me! Before I could qualify, all my work in his team had to be re-evaluated by the "higher-ups" before they'd pass me, just in case he'd only done it cos we'd become an item. We've been together over 25 years now, he's my 3rd husband and definitely counts as "third time's the charm"!

We were 18 and he drove me home from a dance in an ancient Ford Popular. His hair was curly and strawberry blond and in the streetlight coming into the car it appeared gold. The hairs on the back of his hands were gold, his long eyelashes were gold, he wore a gold ring and a gold coloured watch. My golden boyfriend! We were married at 20, 50 years ago. His hair has long gone, he now wears glasses over his bright blue eyes, and statins have crippled him, but he is still my golden darling.

No1 was at college with me and we instantly just gelled, but there was a ginormous age gap and I met him when he was already permanently attached. The love and friendship lasted over 25 years till after his death. No 2 was rebound, a charmer, but overall a waste of space - a typical Peter Pan type who never grew up. No 3 was my OU summer school tutor, talked all night and became best mates and we're still together 30+ years later - he's still gorgeous! I would say similar interests, similar sense of humour and being best friends first, but without fancying one another, something is missing!!!

Both divorced many years, in our 60s, we met at a walking group run by our local council. We were immediately comfortable together as if we'd known each other for years; we didn't stop talking and laughing for the whole of the walk and basically we are still talking and laughing all the time. Been together 10 years and married for 7 - I always say I had to wait a long time to meet the love of my life, but he was worth the wait!

Hattiehelga Tue 30-Aug-16 14:05:56

We went to the same dance hall and discovered we lived in the same area. He used to give,me a lift home and it was all very platonic - until he started taking another girl out. I realised how jealous I was.. I did all I could to make him see how I felt. It worked and it will be fifty three years tomorrow, also our daughter's 46th birthday.

Irma Tue 30-Aug-16 13:20:12

Saw him across the swimming pool while living in Malaysia, love at first sight on both sides, I was 17, he 20, married 18 months later, now married nearly 46 years!

GrammaH Tue 30-Aug-16 13:19:19

Absolutely nothing initially! We both belonged to the same Young Farmers'club & I thought he was rude & generally unpleasant & to be avoided at all costs. For some reason I couldn't fathom, he asked me out one night so I went out of curiosity . In no time; I fell completely in love with him - a gentle, caring man with a great sense of fun who has been trying to find the courage to ask me out for ages but was scared of me! We've been married 35 years...and he's still scared of me!smile

luluaugust Tue 30-Aug-16 13:18:14

We met at a party where he kept asking people to move seats so he could sit next to me, lovely eyes, found out later he was very shortsighted! He has been very kind and supportive over the years especially in the early years when we didn't know if we would have a family.

So many lovely stories here - and heartening to read how many relationships have stood the test of time. I read today that once couples have reached their silver wedding anniversary, their chances of divorce fall to less than 1% per year, so I think that having reached our Pearl Anniversary we'll probably make it after all! wink grin

gillyknits Tue 30-Aug-16 12:57:32

I met my husband at school. He arrived as a 'new boy' from another school when we were both thirteen. He wasn't in the same class as me so I watched from afar. He went out with a couple of other girls for three years and finally, when we were 17 and together in the sixth form, he asked me out.
We have been together ever since. Six years living at different parts of the country from each other and then married for 46 more years.
I don't know what attracted me to him. Looks I suppose, at first, and then personality. He makes me laugh nearly every day.

My DH asked me for a dance when I was at my college disco. The other college men were neanderthals because the women (training teachers) outnumbered the men six to one and the chaps didn't need to try.I was quite impressed - though not by his looks or rather ridiculous clothes. I was even more impressed when he asked me out to lunch the next day and said yes.

We got on like a house on fire. We had both done history and English A levels and liked the same books and he was very enthusiastic and admiring. The more I knew him the more I realised he was funny and very clever even if he didn't look like the alpha male which was the approved boyfriend model at the time. In fact we were both a bit nerdy and old fashioned.

We met on the 27th January 1977 and are coming up for the fortieth anniversary of meeting next year and the thirtyseventh anniversary of marriage this October.

We are still having a blast and have two ridiculous, old fashioned, nerdy, clever, funny children.

LUST, I was 16 & miserable at home with parents who hated each other. He was a gorgeous dark Maltese man I saw working shirtless at a job interview. We married a few weeks later & I found he'd lied about everything from his age to his work history. ( not speaking good English was a great excuse.) However, as we've been married nearly 50 years I'll probably keep him now.

Neversaydie Tue 30-Aug-16 12:29:36

Met DH on the phone (through newspaper ad)He has a gorgeous dark brown voice .The reality was that in the flesh he was no oil painting though he's actually aged a lot better than many friends' husband's and still has a head of lovely(now silver )hair .His huge intelligence and interest in the world .And the fact that he adored me -he says from Day 1! It's hard not to fall for someone who makes you the centre of his world .We have been married 34years together for 36 Had some difficult times and our ups and downs but wouldn't swap him
