We celebrated the birth of a greatgrandaughter last week! This has pushed us all to a new level and will take some getting used to. DH and I are Gtgrandparents, our eldest son is a Granddad and our grandson, that cheeky little boy who we minded not so long ago, is a proud father! Are there any other greatgrans on Gransnet?

GabriellaG Mon 05-Nov-18 13:08:09

Yes indeed. I have 5 AC, 11 GC (+ another in the spring) and 4 GGC.
Life is wonderful.

I am about to become a great grandmother within the next 2 weeks! My eldest grand daughter is about to give birth! Her brother is excited to becoming an uncle! They are in their twenties. The other 4 grand children are under eleven. They are very excited about the new arrival!,

Newatthis Mon 05-Nov-18 13:12:28

No, but I am a great, great Aunt - which makes me feel very old but thrilled that our family in continually extending!

We have 3 great grandchildren, eldest is 9, 7, 6, we are in our late 60s and have just celebrated our golden wedding.

My 26-year-old granddaughter is expecting twins. Now we're all over the initial shock shock (and the expected additional expense!) it's all very exciting. No previous twins in either family.

We were married at 20 and had two children by 27. I hoped to be a young granny but both my children left it very late to have children. I now have four grandchildren under 6 years old. I can't see me making it to be a great granny!

I've a way to go yet but DM was delighted to become a GG when DGS1 was born, she was 81. My eldest DGS is only 8 so I've a way to gogrin

Congratulations MrsEggy flowers & a wine

Hm999 Mon 05-Nov-18 15:23:35

What lovely news. Congratulations to all the generations.

Hm999 Mon 05-Nov-18 15:29:28

This got me thinking. There's a group of six of us, all roughly the same age, who meet regularly. Two are gtgrandmas, one is a new gran, and 3 have no grandchildren despite having married children.

EllanVannin Mon 05-Nov-18 15:37:24

Congratulations MrsEggy you have reached the 4 generations of family life. x
I'm a GG to 7, two of whom are ( twins ) will reach their teens next year. It's brilliant to get this far in life watching the children grow up and for them to know who you are. We're very lucky indeed.

Farawaynanny Mon 05-Nov-18 16:03:16

My mother, aged 89 has 3 great, great grandchildren!

EllanVannin Mon 05-Nov-18 16:26:57

That's brilliant Farawaynanny and something which I'd love to aim for,God Willing. My dear friend who passed away last year had many Great Great GC but she'd been in her 98th year a good age.

I have 3 GGC from my stepgrandchildren (my DS's stepchildren who have been my grandchildren since they were small) plus 2 more from 2 of my 2nd DD's children. With 20+ grandchildren as well it was lovely when my no.1 son's wife gave birth to another GS last month .

Congratulations, did you feel as excited and have the same feelings of attachment as with your grandchildren? I’d be interested to know because I’m due to be a very young wink great grandmother in March

Carolpaint Mon 05-Nov-18 19:18:30

Yes I am a great grandmother, this year to a pretty little girl.
I had on my caseload a great grandmother of only 56. What is odd that nearly all my girlfriends are only just becoming grandmothers let alone greats. I console myself with the thought that my partner got his degree and was a father at 22, grandfather at 38 that baby now has her own company, think he has seven great grandchildren, at least he bought the champagne for me when he heard the news. Life is wonderful.

MrsEggy Mon 05-Nov-18 19:29:26

Thank you all for your congratulations.
morethan2 - I have wondered about attachment, the family live some distance away so I don't suppose we'll see her very often. But I am proud of GS who seems to be a very capable young father - certainly more than DH was, but in those days men were kept very distant from the whole business. He visited me in hospital but was sent away when the birth was imminent.

MrsEggy, Congratulations to you. As you say it has taken you to a whole new level. Jusnoneed I hope you will see your great-grandson one day. Our great-grandson was born last New Year’s Eve and, like you, we have not seen him and it is unlikely that we ever will. I know how much it hurts and I send you a big hug.

Congratulations on becoming great grandparents. I have two great granddaughters ages 5 and 1. I was married young, had my children young and close together, became a grandmother at 42 and great granny at 66. It seemed strange at first the realisation of it but no difference really except Nan to the grandchildren and Granny to the little girls. Next one is due just after Christmas.

Congrats! I'm a stepmum only but my kid has a great-great-grandmother on her mother's side (yup, you read that correctly - it's her grandfather's grandmother) and she is over 100 years old. I think she's about 106 now and reportedly in excellent shape. My late grandparents were also great-greats. My cousin's wife had children and grandchildren from a previous marriage.

crazyH Mon 05-Nov-18 23:57:23

Wow .....great, great grandmother...106 and in excellent shape.....some people are blessed....

I have 2 G,G sons and a third GGC expected next March. Our eldest GD also had a great great grandmother. as did our eldest GS.

agnurse Tue 06-Nov-18 04:08:13

Yes, she lives in a lodge (seniors' facility that provides meals and housekeeping; help with hygiene in the morning and at night are available if they require it) but reportedly she doesn't need any additional support. Hubby met her once when she was in her late 90s and she was still walking without a cane.

M0nica Tue 06-Nov-18 06:54:48

81 is a very suitable age to become a great grandmother, but 59hmm.

At 59, DS was engaged, but grandchildren were still 5 years away. Like others, I am unlikely to live long enough to become a great grandmother. We are a family of late marriages and later children so I will probably need to live into my late 90s to achieve great grandparent status.

Mind you DF lived to 92 and we do have a photo of him with his great grand daughter, he died six months later.
