How long did you know your husband/wife for before you were married?

Leading on from another thread I’ve just posted on.

DH and I got engaged after six weeks and married just over a year later. His parents got engaged after a long weekend and then hardly saw each other between their engagement and the wedding because he was in the RAF. I have encouraged the DCs not to follow our lead - it was rather silly as you really don’t know the person, romantic though it was!

Can anyone beat my PIL?! Or DH and I?

We met in March 1962, got engaged in April 1962, married in September 1962, and are still together 57 years later

We went out 16 times that's all and decided to give it a go. We then lived together for 17 years before getting married 5 years ago. We are unalike but it works. He is totally reliable and honest which is important to me. He said he would treat me like a queen and he always has.

I showed DH this thread last night - we had a a smile looking at all of the stories, and a 'wow' at some of you really fast movers on here!

Met DH when I had just turned 17, got engaged 2 years and five months later and married four years after meeting on a blind date. We have been married 52 years now.
I would have married DH when I was 18 but in those days you had to get written permission from your parents and I would not do that so I waited until I was 21.

Met in Singapore 1969, (I was teaching at a Forces school, he was FCO), engaged 6 weeks later, but didn't marry till 1972 shortly after we returned to the UK, as we wanted a family wedding. (Lived together out there.....). Married for nearly 46 years, till DH died in 2018.

With husband number it was lust at first sight and we married after 8 months and divorced after 6 years. Stayed friends. Husband number 2 was a friend for a for about a year before we got together and he moved in and we married after years of living together. Lasted 30 years because we were friends first and share the same interests. also treat each other as equals, Its a very happy marriage.

Met & married within 12 months 47 years ago. Ages - 19 & 24. She only did it to save me from a life of baked beans & pork pies - it worked.

ladymuck if my husband had made attributions about me based on my family he would never have married me! On the other hand, I'd have married him like a shot - I love my parents-in-law to pieces! grin

We met on holiday in Greece in October and were engaged before the end of the holiday. We told our families at Christmas time and then got married in the following August.
We would have got married sooner but I had to get a new job and we had to sell 2 houses and buy a together home, plus the fact that the reception venue was booked up until then. 35 years on still very happy together.

annsixty Tue 07-Jan-20 16:23:10

We met at school when we were 16 and 15, got engaged at 21 and 19, my mother wouldn’t let me marry so we got married when I was 21 and 3 weeks.
Married for over 60 years when he died 9 months ago.
Would I have married so young with hindsight? No.
Would I have married him again later? In a heartbeat.

Grannybags you were brave living in sin 50 years ago. Someone where I lived tried to do that and her family almost camped outside her door waving a "slut" banner! Her family disowned her. Girl and "bidey up" moved to a city not long after. Now and for the past 20 or so years it's been the norm. You were a trendsetter!

Bluedaisy Tue 07-Jan-20 15:34:35

I met my first husband at 14, got engaged to him at 17, I was married to him at 19. He started having an affair so we broke up in the March when I was 22, got a ‘quicky’ Divorce, I met my present husband on 5th May, we tried for a baby almost immediately as I was already having fertility treatment with first husband due to being told i couldn’t have children from heath reasons, I fell pregnant in July, and married my present husband in October....phew! Gave birth to my son the following March.
Yes it was all extremely quick, no I would never do that again so quickly if I had my time over again, yes we’ve had some rocky times......and good ones....but we’ve just celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary last October. So divorced, met and married again in 6 months.
