I was 19, he was 25, married for nearly 50 years. Canโ€™t believe it really!

We were both 17 - and we share the same birth date. I met him through his sister who was one of my mother's friends. She was 24 years older than him and married with two children before he was born. We didn't go out together until around a year later by which time he had joined the RAF. The prospect of going to live overseas was appealing; we did, 18 months after we married and with a two months old daughter we went to Nairobi Kenya for nearly two years. We have been married 60 years now

I was 17, he was nearly 19. Married two years later.

Been married 51 years.

I was 17, he was 18. We married at age 30 after an on and off relationship. We must be well matched though. We've just celebrated our 42nd anniversary.

OldFrill Wed 17-Apr-24 19:54:20

We met when we were 18, he was part of the crowd I went round with at uni. We didn't pair up for another six years, and got married a year later. We have now been married 56 years.

I was married to my first husband at 20 and he was 24. Divorced after 5 years when he had an affair. I then met my second husband and the love of my life at 32 and he was 25. I wasn't sure at first because of the age gap (and back then it raised a few eyebrows) but we were happily married for 26 years until he died.

Deedaa Wed 17-Apr-24 20:03:50

I was 23 and he was 21. A mere child!

Kate1949 Wed 17-Apr-24 20:09:06

18. He was 21. Married 55 years this year.

eddiecat78 Wed 17-Apr-24 20:17:47

I was 20, he was 23. I knew on our first date that he was "the one". We talked about getting married just a few weeks later but postponed getting engaged until we'd been together for 6 months for fear of alarming our parents - but we then got married just 5 months later. That was 46 years ago

lixy Wed 17-Apr-24 20:20:19

17, though I am 6 months older. He calls me Nan.

What a huge change in a couple of generations! All those teenagers married so young and, in many cases, still together.
My grandchildren are in their late 20s and are in settled relationships but marriage, a home of their own and children are donkeyโ€™s years away.

paddyann54 Wed 17-Apr-24 20:31:46

I was 20 on our first date he was 19,we married exactly a year later a month after his 20th birthday .49 years married in the summer. .50 years after that first date We worked together every day and lived together after the wedding, wasn't the thing to live together before marriage in our families ,so really we've spent the equivalent of 100 "normal" years of marriage together and we wouldn't change a thing

eddiecat78 Wed 17-Apr-24 20:35:40

I think couples got married earlier then because living together was still very much frowned upon by our parents' generation and most of us did want their approval. If we wanted to cohabit we had to be married

Scapa1 Wed 17-Apr-24 20:38:21

I was 15 and he was 16 both at same school. Married when I was 21 after we both graduated. No money but both got jobs. We seem to have rubbed along not to badly may keep him!

Scapa1 Wed 17-Apr-24 20:39:19

Meant to say married 51years this year.

Redrobin51 Wed 17-Apr-24 20:41:48

Both 16 and still at school. It will be 50 years this year. We've had some very bad times but still ticking along together.

kittylester Wed 17-Apr-24 20:48:59

I was 21 two weeks later, he was 24. We married 9 months later in October 1970. I hope we have many more years together.

Your right.
We wanted to live together and then go abroad to get married, but werenโ€™t allowed to & had to โ€˜do it properly or not at allโ€™ (my Mums words).
We had the big Church wedding.
My son, 29 & his girlfriend, 24 live with us.
My parents would never have allowed that ๐Ÿ˜‚

Redcar Wed 17-Apr-24 21:59:12

I was 22, he was 26, we married 2 years later and were still married when he fell victim to covid. It would have been our 53rd anniversary next week.

Lived in the same town, he went off to sea as a cadet in the Merchant Navy at 17, used to see each other around, he admits that he always thought I was the 'one' but wanted to do his travelling first!! We eventually got together at 21, married at 23. Been married for 56 years.
