HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Hi. Today is my birthday and I've been completely alone all day. I don't usually expect much these days now I'm in my mid 70s, but today I didn't receive a card, a present or even a phone call until after 9pm when my son called. Like most grans I help out a lot. I don't ask them for anything but always there for them anytime. Its only a birthday I know, but it did hit me how so unimportant I am. I search for the best gifts I can find when its their day. I feel so alone. There thats the rant over, I feel better now.

Another belated happy birthday beautybumble. There is absolutely no excuse (barring emergencies) for your son's behaviour. Whilst it's true that younger people cannot possibly relate to being old and alone, they know perfectly well what a birthday is, especially when it's their own. I'll bet they don't forget those.

It's the one day of the year when you can show you are thinking of someone and, in your case, acknowledge all the help your son and DIL receive from you.

I feel angry on your behalf and personally if it was me I'd jolly well show it. They deserve to feel guilty.

🎉 Happy Birthday 🎉 beautybumble. I hope the many posts on GN will have brightened your day. 💐

Belated birthday wishes beautybumble 💐🥂. I really don’t think there is any excuse for not remembering your parents’ birthday, however busy their lives might be. I hope the sun is shining for you and you enjoy today.

Happy Birthday. Hope you have a great year ahead.

I saw the heading of this thread and thought oh thats nice to
see because its my birthday today. I have had a few Whatsapp
from my adult children so its a good start to the day but I
can understand the Op's feelings and sympathize.
I had planned a treat for myself today - a Chinese Massage -
as Monday is a crummy day for a birthday but it would be
nice if the rain went to Spain.

A belated happy birthday,

However I was horrified by your phrase I don't ask them for anything but always there for them anytime.

I think you should immediately cease both not asking for aanything and always being there for your children. With the best intentions in the world, you have ended up with children that treat you like a door mat.

So use your birthday to make a new resolution and next time your children automatically assume you will look after their children while they go out on the town, say 'no' because you have booked a meal out, a visit to a show or even just an early night.

And next year when your birthday comes, remind your children it is coming and ask them where they are going to take you out to, to celebrate the event.

it is sad but true when someone unselfishly lets other people walk over them, all they do is wipe their feet on them, and it is children of devoted parents who are ones most likely to do that.

Loe and devotion should be a two-way street.

BeautyBumble I totally understand your feelings and wish you a slightly late very Happy Birthday.

Our adult children can be thoughtless and wrapped up in their busy lives. I thought I was very attentive to my Mum at the time but now I look back and see that I could have done more.... and could have listened more to her worries.

Next year make sure you have something planned, as others have said. Meanwhile today is the time to be nice to yourself

flowers for you. Have a lovely day.

A belated Happy Birthday from me too. The day is glorious here, and hope the sun is shining for you too and you manage give yourself a treat as others have suggested.

Beauty Bumble, understand how hurtful it is. A belated Happy Birthday, as others have said, treat yourself, take yourself off for the day. I spent most of my life looking after everyone, I did enjoy being wanted, but now lucky to get a phone call or should I say text, they are all so busy enjoying their lives.💐

Belated birthday wishes from me as well. We also enjoy celebrating a birthday week, especially with those who have birthdays falling on other celebratory days in the year.
I think you spoil yourself this week, but also tell your family how you feel. Being busy is no excuse.

RosiesMaw Mon 17-Jun-24 07:49:01

I absolutely understand where you are coming from!
Just because we have HAD lots of birthdays does not make them any less important - in fact they are even MORE important as we might not have so many more.
Mine is always overshadowed these days because it is one day off D2’s (late) MIL’s birthday and the anniversary of her death 2 years ago. And SIL’s family always make a thing of that sad Also D1 and SIL’s birthdays are 2 and 3 days before mine so of course their “big” birthdays have in the past taken precedence.
I just go with the flow (or try to) but if I want to tactfully remind them of MINE I do it by a “keep the date” invitation to lunch here, the weekend before or after.
But I agree - you deserve better 🌺

Happy belated birthday wishes beautybumble flowers

Of course, it was Father's Day yesterday so perhaps they all got caught up in that, although I think they could have made a bit more effort to contact you.
Weekends can be very lonely when you're on your own. You can plan activities in the week but somehow everyone seems busy at weekends.

Try to think of yourself more, get out, meet people and enjoy yourself!

Bumface Mon 17-Jun-24 07:34:02

I understand why you felt hurt. Birthdays mean less as we get older, but we like them to be remembered. I am sure you are appreciated even though your family are not very good at showing it and seem to take you for granted.
Those of us who were lucky enough to have nice, caring parents/grandparents will always remember them with fondness.

Happy belated birthday beautybumble! flowers. Do try and treat yourself today - forget about housework etc and just have a day of spoiling yourself.

Happy Birthday beautybumble!
I know what you mean about feeling unimportant, when any of my family go on holiday, have something important going on etc, I always text or phone to wish them a happy holiday or good luck etc. We recently went away for a few days and not one happy holiday text and I wasn't even asked if we had a good time when we got back! I don't think anyone had remembered we were going away and we obviously weren't missed. Oh well we had a good time.

I can relate to this.

Our son has no idea when we are going, where we are going, or when we are coming back (if we go away), despite being told.

When they go away, we go up to their home daily to feed the Guinea pigs, check all is ok, DH cuts the grass if it needs doing, put bins out.

They say they will come and check ours, pick up post etc. but not sure if they do. As for putting the bins out, the neighbour does that, they would not get put out otherwise. It would only be remembered when too late by family.

Happy Birthday for yesterday. I’m sorry and I feel for you. Our children can be thoughtless at times so engrossed in their own lives.

Go out today and buy yourself some flowers your favourite food and treat yourself today.

I had a couple of things that upset me yesterday and today I am going to treat myself to a day doing what I want to do.

I know and understand how you are feeling though 💐

BigBertha1 Mon 17-Jun-24 06:50:09

Belated Happy Birthday from me too. I'm sorry you didn't have a good day. I hope today is better and the sun shines on you.

Belated Birthday greetings from me, I’m sorry I didn’t see this post yesterday.

Happy birthday beautybumble and enjoy the rest of your week like Redhead56 recommends 💐

Not making excuses here but do you think it also being Father's Day might have had something to do with the late phone call from your son? 🤔

cornergran Mon 17-Jun-24 00:18:37

A happy birthday wish from me. I’m sorry you didn’t post in the morning of your birthday. There would have been many heartfelt good wishes. I do understand, it hurts not to be remembered. I also agree with cocopops though, treat yourself to something you’ll enjoy, you are definitely worth it.

henetha Mon 17-Jun-24 00:02:30

I hope something in your day was happy anyway. Young people can be thoughtless at times. But I'm sure your son would try harder if he knew what loneliness is like.
All the very best to you. 😊

Redhead56 Mon 17-Jun-24 00:01:28

I wish you a happy birthday week! that’s how long we celebrate special occasions here for a whole week. It’s our way to brighten us up and why not take yourself out and treat yourself 💐

Chestnut Sun 16-Jun-24 23:54:16

Happy birthday from here. If you had posted that this morning I think you would have had dozens of messages by now, but then you didn't know then how the day would pan out.

If you only have one son then he really should make more effort to get a card and present. But men are pretty useless at all that, some worse than others. If he has a wife or partner then he/she should give him a nudge. Disappointing to be ignored, that's for sure. But the young really have no idea at all what it's like to be old and alone.

I don't know what your situation is, but if possible you should try and meet up with someone next time, or if you can't go out then ask someone over for tea and cake. You could even ask your son over, which would draw attention to it being your birthday and he would be obliged to bring something for you. Ha ha. If it's a weekday then go for the evening or the closest weekend day. Good luck and hope that makes it a better day. 🌈💐🎈🍰☕
