Instruct a solicitor who specialises in private law matters. They will give you the right advice which you need. Meanwhile set your stall out by living as separately in the same house as possible. Best of luck

Years ago my DH and I split with a financial settlement only. The solicitor did all the work and I stayed in the property whilst buying out my DH. We didn't divorce for a few years after because children were involved.

I know your circumstances are different and times have changed but I would inquire about a financial settlement first. The divorce is a small matter and only for you to decide.

I would take a free half hour with a good solicitor initially.

My husband's cousin has done this for the same reason just 2 years ago and is now quite clearly free as a bird.
She has a tiny home but is 15 years younger!

Luckily her adult children are supportive - and have helped her husband too.

Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of pension sharing? Married for over 40 years to a heavy drinker and I can’t take any more. Both retired. STBX has large private pension which if split would provide sufficient income for us both. I understand it's a long legal process to split the pension. I need to think about the process. Things could get very difficult for me. I think the sooner we start the legal process of splitting the pension the better. But I'm not sure when to start the divorce process. For example if divorce was finalised first before pension sorted out could I be vulnerable? We also have a house to sell, mortgage free. Basically I think I would have enough for a small flat with half our current income. A different life but safer and happier? Any advice much appreciated.
