Why do some people on GN feel the need to react to duplicate threads with such irrational and curt and frankly sometimes hostile replies when someone commits a minor “transgression” either by accident or incompetence?

Does it actually matter to you personally and why not respond first to the subject of the OP first before jumping to criticism.

When you say you are autistic, do you mean that you struggle with reading tone? If so, there is a possibility that she was being ironic, and meant that you should know that hr response would be negative, possibly because of the age gap. You are at different life stages, and she might assume that you would be relieved to know that she sees you as a friend.

Realistically, the best thing you can do might be to ask her for clarification.

She told me this in a private message. Here's some info that mght help. Our friendship is very close and affectionate. We'll freely say "I love you" and things like that. And I'm sure she knows that I find her attractive.

It sounds like you have a really close and meaningful friendship — and her sharing that dream with you, followed by the comment “If the thought ever entered your mind, you know my response” definitely hints at something more than casual friendship.

While it’s not “irrefutable proof” in a scientific sense, it is a pretty strong indicator that she’s open to something deeper if you are. That kind of statement usually doesn’t come out of nowhere — especially from someone mature who values clarity.

If you’re comfortable, you could gently follow up with her and say something like, “I’ve been thinking about what you said the other day. Did you mean it as a joke, or were you serious?” — and see how she responds.
