Ha Ha! Jess - I do remember jiving in my teens in the early 60s, but I was referring to an afro-carribean expression - jiving, as in walking with a soul rhythm. Bob Marley's 'Riding High' has lyrics about jiving and having dreadlocks.

whenim64 ... jiving? 2 generations out my dear. I have a suspicion you did not jive in your youth and this guy is a mere lad. smile
I'm an atheist too, so watch with interest. Yes he is very different in style to Rowan isn't he who cultivated that Gandalf look to an extreme.

Maybe it will set a precedent and the new Arch Bish here will be more 'alternative'!! Don't think so.... wink

Annobel grin

He'll either do wonders for the Anglican Communion or send the faithful running for cover. Anyway, what are a few dreadlocks compared with a beard that might be harbouring small birds and quite a few cornflakes.

I like the sound of him, when - if only I was a believer.....grin

The thought of an archbish jiving up the steps to the cathedral with his dreadlocks contained under his mitre is irresistable! Let's see more of this. Not that I am much entitled to have a say - I'm an atheist! grin

Totally agree Riverwalk ...never thought the image of present Archbishop of Canterbury did much to bring in new members of the church, hmm

I've just read a few articles about him .... he seems to have led an exemplary life working with the marginalised since he was a teenager.

What's a few dreadlocks compared to the many conventional priests/vicars, with short back and sides, who live high on the hog, have affairs, or abuse children, etc.

I am having trouble imagining him in an English cathedral.

his appearance does not necessarily have any bearing on his good /poor skills as a spiritual leader. I always found Kiwis ( sweeping statement!) quite conservative in attitudes so guess he must have something more than dreadlocks!

Perhaps they think that trendiness equates to relevance.

The anglican diocese of Wellington (capital city of NZ) has just appointed a new bishop. He has a long mop of dreadlocks and lives in a commune.
I wonder what UK anglicans make of this interesting appointment.
