Religion can be good for your mental health

The Daily Telegraph reports today on research carried out by Prof Dan Cohen at the University of Missouri. They have found that the mental health of people recovering from different medical conditions 'appears to be related to positive spiritual beliefs and especially congregational support and spiritual interventions (prayer)'. It doesn't seem to matter which religion people believe in since they got similar results with Buddhists, Muslims, Jews, Catholics and Protestants.

No, of course there isn't any proof! That's why it's called faith!

Greatnan Sun 26-Aug-12 11:19:36

It wasn't the cruelty, snobbery and hypocrisy that I witnessed that made me an atheist - it was thinking, reading and studying and coming to the conclusion that there was absolutely no proof of the existence of any supernatural being.

It seems a lot of people who went to RC schools rebelled against their religion. Perhaps the way they were treated when young has put them off for life.

I've met more than a few people over the years that felt their early experiences with the likes of the Christian Brothers had a detrimental effect on their mental health...

grin

I would get DD to make it for me but she is at the moment travelling on a train from Paris to Milan via Switzerland. (slightly worried although she is a very grown up DD now!)

That doesn't count as a job - just foreplay.

JO4 Sat 25-Aug-12 16:59:40

The jobs are of my own making. For example, I have to make a madeira cake as I want to eat madeira cake! grin

Greatnan Sat 25-Aug-12 16:53:58

Not me, jingle, I have no jobs waiting to be done - well, except all the books that are waiting to be read!

Anagram Sat 25-Aug-12 16:53:50

Rather that than have my choice of words mocked. I made an observation, that's all. I'll leave you to it.

JO4 Sat 25-Aug-12 16:52:47

I think a really good book is amazing for your mental health.

Though you do get a bit flummoxed when you come out of it and realise there are still loads of jobs waiting to be done! hmm

I managed an hour's walk before it started to rain heavily. Still warm, though, and lovely smells through the open windows.

So, back to the OP. I think that no religion can be good for your mental health as well. Better, in my opinion, but probably neither position can actually be proved. In which case, it's fine to just blether about the subject and wander off course, as is our wont on GN.

Cheers, all! wine sunshine (We went to archery club in sunshine and got rained off).

Stalin was sent to a seminary to train to be a priest. I think he probably learned a few things about controlling people there. Just thought I'd chuck that in.

Greatnan Sat 25-Aug-12 16:36:44

Did you want your post to go unremarked, Anagram?

JO4 Sat 25-Aug-12 16:30:51

Mind you, the thread has become far too complicated for me! smile

JO4 Sat 25-Aug-12 16:30:01

Lilygran I could have done with some of that sunshine earlier. Went out on my bike to get some nice bread for lunch. Halfway there the heavens opened. Nothing gets wetter than a skirt when you are riding a bicycle. The rain collects in your lap. And my blouse went transparent.

Sorry to thread wander. blush

Lilygran Sat 25-Aug-12 16:17:39

Alison sunshinewine

Annobel Sat 25-Aug-12 16:12:43

I think I'll quit this thread. I've stated my position; some may not like it but it isn't a criticism of anyone else. Each to his/her own.

Anagram Sat 25-Aug-12 16:03:00

It was a turn of phrase, Greatnan, but I should have known my post would not go unremarked...

Greatnan Sat 25-Aug-12 15:57:24

I have to admit that debating religious topics with intelligent people of all shades of opinion is very good for my mental health - makes me think and keeps me on my toes.

JessM Sat 25-Aug-12 15:47:46

True annobel
They are still holding out their hands for masses for the dead though lilygran. re purgatory etc. You makes up your theology and you opens the coffers.
I agree Greatnan - empire of evil, those old men I'm afraid, still, after all this time. Not to mention pedophile-priest-denying.

AlisonMA Sat 25-Aug-12 15:46:01

Lily I could do with that sun, when I look out my window it seems to be April!

Annobel Sat 25-Aug-12 15:37:03

Of course it's true that many atheists are not humanists - one only has to think of the vicious Stalinist regime. Nothing humanist about that!

Lilygran Sat 25-Aug-12 15:24:51

Oh, whoops! Meant to send sunshine to Alison!

Greatnan Sat 25-Aug-12 15:24:13

No, it doesn't!
