Who is God?

Dear friends,
This is the article which I mentioned on the Spiritual page yesterday.
Please keep an open mind while reading it, and remember that we should always respect another persons beliefs, even if you don't agree with them!

We all have our own views on such a sensitive subject as "Religion"!

Who is God?

Well folks, this is my idea on God!
I hope it does not offend anyone, but it may give something to think on!
I think that God, as we are taught, is a Spirit, We have been led to believe in God as a person, whom we take after ; - This makes it easier to explain, as people in general cannot accept a more ethereal being that is not bound by time or space,.
God is the Spirit of life; it runs through all living things. Therefore we are part of God and the God Spirit is part of us!
(I trust that this does not sound like blasphemy to anybody. These are my own thoughts expressed here!)
Life is sacred, and we all have free will. We have a moral code, laid down by wise leaders over many thousands of years.
Ideally, we use our conscience to behave and live by that moral code.
I believe in a power, much stronger than we can imagine, whose strength we can call upon to strengthen and help us when we ask. This is always available to all, no matter whether you have a faith or not, Of course, as with all things, if you have faith, you are a more positive person which uses your stronger inner strength!
I call that powerful Spirit GOD!
Many religions recognise God in different ways, and I think that each of us has their own pathway to tread. We should not force our own thoughts upon other people.
I am proud to be a Christian, but I respect other points of view!
Jesus is widely recognised as a great Teacher in other religions and respected as such.
As for natural disasters, I have no answer. For crimes of war, brutality, injustice, etc. I bring in the argument of "Free Will" again!
, This does not address all of the points raised, i.e., sickness, but this again is a natural phenomena caused by environmental and other conditions, some of which are man made! - Free will again!
Nature has a way of protecting itself, which is not always in our best interests!!
Sorry if I've gone on a bit with my ramblings. It may provoke a bigger discussion!

Who would have thought that religion would have been "up for grabs" (grabs not Bags) Along with politics it's the subject most likely to cause friction. It's specious at best, and a well known paradox, that has caused more trouble in the world than even politics.I have an insouciance to the subject considering it to be more of a business than a theological concept, or an error that will become a mistake if not corrected. It's not otiose, giving some relief to some, as it does, but I opine that its misuse has caused more damage than enough.A brief look at the previous posts to see the polemics generated is indicative of this fact.
hmm

Petallus Once you've grasped the rules of grammar you can't really go wrong. There are so few exceptions (such as la mano) that you can simply learn them. Que tengas suerte.

Oh dear absent I'm finding Spanish quite a challenge. It's all those verby things which I don't understand in English let alone another language.

JO4 Tue 04-Sept-12 10:49:12

that's the RAF motto!

JO4 Tue 04-Sept-12 10:44:50

Not when we've got google. smile

AlieOxon Tue 04-Sept-12 10:44:14

Mine was Per Ardua ad Astra - which neatly puts two of the others together...
I don't need to translate?

Joan Tue 04-Sept-12 10:23:18

Typical of the Yorkshire attitude, my old school motto was nil sine labore, ie nothing without work, or nowt baht work in Yorksher.

nanaej Tue 04-Sept-12 10:06:33

Non nobis domine.... was our school motto. There is a hymn as well... I got 22% in latin in the then 4th year which Latin master wrote in my report was a true reflection of my ability! But I did not let that bastard grind me down!

absentgrana Tue 04-Sept-12 09:19:04

petallus Latin is quite boring to learn but fairly easy – Spanish is more fun and even easier.

petallus Tue 04-Sept-12 09:04:32

I've been learning Spanish for the last few months but if this carries on I shall switch to Latin

absentgrana Tue 04-Sept-12 08:52:41

Alma mater, curriculum vitae, prima gravida – it's tempting to add for ever and ever Amen.

absentgrana Tue 04-Sept-12 08:41:14

My school motto was in English but the school song (carmen) was in Latin. It was a complete pain to memorise all the verses and we discovered that the best way to do this was to sing it to the theme tune of Z Cars.

Marelli Tue 04-Sept-12 08:37:20

My C of E primary school's motto was Quo Vadis. (I've never had much sense of direction.....grin)

Ad infinitum!

Greatnan Mon 03-Sept-12 16:36:36

Thanks you, Mamie, I will have a look at that.

MiceElf Mon 03-Sept-12 16:35:12

It's the motto of the Cochran clan in Scotland.

feetlebaum Mon 03-Sept-12 16:05:45

WHere I went to school the motto was 'Virtute et Labore' -- and not once did anyone ensure we knew what it meant. Apparently, taking into account the infuriating Latin declension system irt comes out as: 'By valour and exertion' or perhaps 'By struggle and courage'. Beats me...

Mamie Mon 03-Sept-12 16:02:22

Greatnan I downloaded a free app called Lexibar French. It sits on your desktop or your page when you need it and you can drag and drop the accents.

vampirequeen Mon 03-Sept-12 15:36:00

I didn't go to the type of school that had a motto hmm

gracesmum Mon 03-Sept-12 14:23:47

lily confused?

Greatnan Mon 03-Sept-12 13:42:15

Bags, it obviously had an effect on you!

absentgrana Mon 03-Sept-12 13:34:38

Greatnan That sounds positively fascist. shock Worse still, the saying love conquers all refers to the love of god, so you would have thought that they would have stuck with that. hmm

Nonu Mon 03-Sept-12 13:32:09

Lilygran tee hee.

Bags Mon 03-Sept-12 13:31:03

grin again, lily!

Our school motto was "Action not Words" which we translated as "Sock it to 'em, gels".

Greatnan Mon 03-Sept-12 13:28:06

Thank you, Anagram, I have to type a lot in French so that is very useful to know.
My school motto was a perversion of 'Love conquers all'. The miserable nuns had made it into 'Omnia vincit labor' - work conquers all. Typical!
