Who is God?

Dear friends,
This is the article which I mentioned on the Spiritual page yesterday.
Please keep an open mind while reading it, and remember that we should always respect another persons beliefs, even if you don't agree with them!

We all have our own views on such a sensitive subject as "Religion"!

Who is God?

Well folks, this is my idea on God!
I hope it does not offend anyone, but it may give something to think on!
I think that God, as we are taught, is a Spirit, We have been led to believe in God as a person, whom we take after ; - This makes it easier to explain, as people in general cannot accept a more ethereal being that is not bound by time or space,.
God is the Spirit of life; it runs through all living things. Therefore we are part of God and the God Spirit is part of us!
(I trust that this does not sound like blasphemy to anybody. These are my own thoughts expressed here!)
Life is sacred, and we all have free will. We have a moral code, laid down by wise leaders over many thousands of years.
Ideally, we use our conscience to behave and live by that moral code.
I believe in a power, much stronger than we can imagine, whose strength we can call upon to strengthen and help us when we ask. This is always available to all, no matter whether you have a faith or not, Of course, as with all things, if you have faith, you are a more positive person which uses your stronger inner strength!
I call that powerful Spirit GOD!
Many religions recognise God in different ways, and I think that each of us has their own pathway to tread. We should not force our own thoughts upon other people.
I am proud to be a Christian, but I respect other points of view!
Jesus is widely recognised as a great Teacher in other religions and respected as such.
As for natural disasters, I have no answer. For crimes of war, brutality, injustice, etc. I bring in the argument of "Free Will" again!
, This does not address all of the points raised, i.e., sickness, but this again is a natural phenomena caused by environmental and other conditions, some of which are man made! - Free will again!
Nature has a way of protecting itself, which is not always in our best interests!!
Sorry if I've gone on a bit with my ramblings. It may provoke a bigger discussion!

jeni Thu 30-Aug-12 19:23:46

I cannot follow this thread?
To whom does it matter if there is a God, god, or not?
Is this not a matter of individual belief?

I, would rather discuss, how many angels can dance on the point of a needle!

Alison I know you were trying to compliment me. I was referring to the reference to "some people" . I am using this as an example. You have not upset me or anyone that I am aware of by this post - but wording like that can upset people.
Do you really not understand that when you refer to "some people" then, well, some people (but not all, admittedly) wmight just possibly think you are making an indirect dig at them?
I have noticed that you repeatedly use such phrases, sometimes annoying or upsetting others, and then claim you did not mean to annoy or upset. It is very confusing for us. In real life the nonverbal components of speech reveal whether you "mean it" or not. Here the words stand alone and people interpret them through their own frame of reference.
But there is obviously something about the words you are choosing that is rather more ambiguous than the norm.

INDEED Nonu

Bloody hell Flippin' 'eck. Why am I having to spend so much time apologising just lately?!

JO4 Thu 30-Aug-12 19:00:31

Sorry! grin

JO4 Thu 30-Aug-12 18:59:32

Nonu in contemplative mood

Nonu Thu 30-Aug-12 18:47:14

Forgive me but it seems to me that if a chap says something to -some- poster s it like manna from heaven , the wise one has spoken xxx

Bags Thu 30-Aug-12 18:22:57

Speak for yourself, jings. I'm listening as well as talking. [humph empticon] Haha! empticon, is probably better!

JO4 Thu 30-Aug-12 18:16:58

I didn't blame you Anagram! I just hadn't read that particular post. (Not that I've read many of the others. Aren't they long?! hmm)

AlisonMA Thu 30-Aug-12 18:14:57

Jess I'm sorry but my intention was to complement you, not to refer to anyone else. DH has a great problem with admitting he is wrong and so do several other men I know. If I had been referring to GN I would have said so but I didn't. Its like the reference to me having a go at atheists, I didn't, I simply made a defence of some Christians but I was still falsely accused. I would be much happier if people could just take posts at their face value and not read things into what isn't there.

Off to the theatre now. smile

Anagram Thu 30-Aug-12 18:12:27

gramps mentioned PMT jingl - don't blame me! hmm

Nanadogsbody Thu 30-Aug-12 18:06:43

gramps don't overdo the 'mere male' please, it doesn't become you!

JO4 Thu 30-Aug-12 18:03:48

No - I don't think I insulted you Gramps! I just didn't thank you for the poem, which was actually rather nice.

JO4 Thu 30-Aug-12 18:00:53

Whatever Bags.

Might as well talk to the hands, the heads sure as hell aren't listening.

Well, only the ones that want to agree with each other. hmm

JO4 Thu 30-Aug-12 17:59:41

PMT????!!!!!!

Where was that brought up! shock hmm

Anagram Thu 30-Aug-12 17:54:09

gramps, you are very wise not to blame anything on PMT on this site! Most of us (not all!) are well beyond that stage of our lives, thank goodness. wink

Bags Thu 30-Aug-12 17:53:31

The thread continues because we are trying to understand, jings. Not everything, of course, but more than we did before.

JessM Thu 30-Aug-12 17:51:48

Yes of course I would agree with you if we were chatting face to face. But when you write something like that in a forum it is not at all surprising to me that some people think "Does she mean me?"
Can you not see that?

MiceElf Thu 30-Aug-12 17:51:12

Bags, I'm off out now. I'll try to answer tomorrow. And I'll try to be succinct, but no promises!

JO4 Thu 30-Aug-12 17:51:11

I don't think anyone on the latter part of this thread understands what anyone else is saying, except of course the 'usual suspects' who will always be on the same wavelength.

So I will say no more. Except that, if Gransnet HQ want to delete any of my posts they are quite welcome to do so.

Bags Thu 30-Aug-12 17:51:04

I think there might be some confusion over the difference between whatever politics drives the countries you mention, lily, with secularism which, from what I have read about it, strives to be apolitical as well as areligious.

What you say appears correct on the surface but secularism does not, in itself, bring about repressive regimes – that is done by extreme politics of the left and right. The gradually increasing secularisation of much of Europe over the last century (still going on) has resulted in greater equality in the same countries.
