But the quoted extract from The Universal Declaration of Human Rights Article 18 : "Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief..." seems to me to be defective, in that it refers to a "religion or belief". A bloody-minded person or government could argue that atheism is not a belief, but an absence of belief, and therefore not covered by the Declaration.

I agree, Eloethan, but atheism means without or no god, which to e.g. the Indonesian government can be interpreted to mean a belief in nothing, i.e. a non-belief. I just feel that in the light of experience the drafting could be improved. Mind you, the drafting committee would be an interesting gathering!

I am a Catholic and obviously do believe that there is a GOD, but I do not agree with putting this man in prison for not beleiving.

Many many catholics were in prisoned and killed due to believeing in God.

Hope this guy gets his freedom back soon.
