The resurrection

Did anyone else watch the bbc2 programme The Bible Hunters last night?.
It seemed to point out that the post resurrection appearances of Jesus were later additions to Mark's gospel.
As mark is the earliest of the gospels and all the others were written later, this poses an interesting question.

Has anyone seen the BBC videos suggesting that Jesus did not die on the cross?

They seemed to me important and can bee seen on YouTube.

I've just read this thread - I don't know how I missed it because it's something that has interested me for years, since I was a student.
Someone asked about the works of Josephus. I have a copy of "Josephus, the Jewish War", a Penguin Classic, published 1984.
Part of the book gives Josephus' version of the history of the Jews in the Holy Land, and includes vague references to Jesus. There are notes at the back which add to this.
I don't know if it's still in print.
DH studies religious scriptures and says that Jesus was recognised as a learned Rabbi and his writings exist somewhere.

Did anyone else watch it?
I thought it was really clever, the way they had so many people involved, and telling their stories.

All those going to South Shields will be going to see the cross, Nonu. The shipping containers are in the shape of a cross.

rosequartz Thu 17-Apr-14 20:21:10

Yes

Nonu Thu 17-Apr-14 20:15:25

Good Friday, whenever it falls, late or early, is STill the most holy day of the Christian Calender !!

rosequartz Thu 17-Apr-14 20:00:07

DH says it is the first weekend after the first full moon after the spring equinox!

rosequartz Thu 17-Apr-14 19:58:29

Ah, well, it all depends on the phases of the moon. It is a moveable feast.

Nonu Thu 17-Apr-14 19:43:06

Well there you go Durhamjem, as the song goes that"s life.
Good Friday is Still the most holy day of the year for Christians !!

durhamjen Thu 17-Apr-14 19:34:36

Wish it wouldn't keep moving, though. It's very late this year, or are other years early?

Nonu Thu 17-Apr-14 18:59:28

Many, many I would imagine will spend an hour before the cross !

I will probably stick with the Gospels this Easter thank you.

feetlebaum Thu 17-Apr-14 12:53:21

The only 'meaning' of life is to continue the species. Anything else is just self-agrandizement.

Mishap Thu 17-Apr-14 12:26:43

Sigh.

There are other writings regarding the crucifixion and resurrection not only the new Testament. Loads of academics, some of them extremely skeptical and some bent on discrediting it, have researched it and have ended up convinced that the amazing events actually happened.

Galen Fri 28-Feb-14 13:57:42

You can probably find it on I player still

seaspirit Fri 28-Feb-14 13:08:51

never realised this was on as I might have watched it, the new testament, doesn't really stand up, the churches have never really taken it very seriously, the early christian church was aimed at slaves, as the Romans were in charge and the hebrew people little more then slaves ( hence the extra mile rule, any Roman could pick on any hebrew and could order them to do what every they needed done) then came Nicea and a pagan decided what the christian church should do and not do, then came Henry 8th who made his own church up because he wanted a forbidden woman as his wife.
on the other hand I know it is possible to bring back a soul if it has not gone too far , happens every day.
The risen Christ might not even have been who they thought it was, no one reconised him, so he might have been anyone claiming to be resurrected.
so much of the bible is guess work itwaswrittenlikethiswithnopunctionationorcaptials, and translated by people with no great knowledge of the early language. the word Hades this doesn't do Greek was translated 12 different ways to make it fit the early church teachings. spent years chasing the legends at the libraries including British museum library and studying theology. they are still finding books of the bible that did not make it to the 'holy bible'

Thanks, Galen for the OP and the other information daffodil. Why the objection to Oxford? Or was it just to theology? Not strictly relevant to the resurrection but interesting that Biblical sources are still being uncovered www.theguardian.com/books/2014/feb/13/ark-before-noah-irving-finkel-review
