If a man1 is fighting man2 and man1's wife tries to help her husband by squeezing the testicles of man2 then she has to have her hand chopped off. Do you hold with this?

Or that a man with crushed testicles or missing his penis due to injury then he's not allowed in a church?

I started this thread with a genuine interest but the more I research the more bizarre sin becomes.

The bible? A fairly arbitrary collection of human writing, human editing and human translation. It exists in many versions with much repetition and a multitude of differences. I can't read Aramaic, know only a very few words of Hebrew and what Ancient Greek I did know is extremely rusty so I'm always a little sceptical about "what the bible says".

From translations it does appear that there are scores of rules about what you can and cannot eat, sacrifices, diseases, agriculture, animal husbandry, slavery, death, inheritance, idolatry, worship and festivals – among other things. There is very little about sexual matters, although sex – hetero and homo – seems to be a preoccupation among the many sects of Christianity from fundamentalist evangelicals to Catholic cardinals. Weird.

I wonder how many were abused by Christian missionaries too?

I saw an African man being interviewed on TV a few weeks ago and he said that the homophobia that is sweeping across parts of Africa is a relatively new phenomenon which has been largely incited by evangelical, mainly American, Christians.

I am always very wary when someone tells us what god wants - peculiarly, god's views always seem to coincide with the speakers' - and may be the complete opposite of someone else making the same claim.

Christians are in no way supposed to be murdering gays. We are supposed to be loving people, not murdering them.

Grannyknot my son, when he was tiny, would play quietly with his little cars along the aisle during church services. Everyone would smile benignly, and the minister would mention him by name. That was a Methodist church.

I am very uncomfortable with fundamentalism in all its forms from IS murdering other Muslims because they are the wrong group, Christians murdering gay people in Uganda and Jewish extremists who brand anyone who questions what is happening in Palestine as being anti - semitic or holocaust deniers. There is no room for this intolerance in my.life and nowhere in among this behaviour do I see evidence of people being anything other than smugly self assured of their own salvation which behaviour in itself is surely blasphemous, ironically.

This is the sort of Christian my mother was: she sang in the church choir and there was no one to look after us of an evening (my gran was the organist) - so the three of us would accompany her to choir practice. Bored stiff we would have "races" by lying on our backs and hanging on to the edge of the pews and scooting across the highly polished floors under the benches at the back of the church. One day we were caught and severely told off for disrespecting the house of God - I actually remember the woman saying "God sees you because he doesn't sleep" which was a bit scary, I was about 5 years old. Anyway my mother soon shut the complainant up by saying how delighted she was at our creativity at keeping ourselves occupied. And something about how God loves little children.

So maybe I had committed a genial sin!
