What do you believe happens after death?
Are we reincarnated?
Do we go to heaven or hell?
Is there nothing at all after this life is over?
I'm very interested, lately, to ponder these things.
Thanks Lyndilo, I will check it out.
Bridgeit I bet there's loads of information on the Internet. (They call it NDE.)
A family member has also described the same type of experience.
I wonder if any surveys have been done, it would be very interesting & beneficial to have some statistics.
Oh yes, thank you very both much.
I live in hope of having an experience which brings me closer to believing in something more.
Thank you Annie and Lyndiloo
I wasn't sure whether to share my experience but I'm glad that I did.
Smileless Your description of your Near Death Experience sounds exactly the same as described in the book that I mentioned earlier (Dying to be Me). Thank you for that!
I've had many experiences of a 'super natural' kind. I'm a Reiki Healer, so sort of open myself to it. I don't speak about it much, as, as others have said, people either don't believe you or think you are odd. It's been enough to convince me that our spirits go on, and can sometimes reach out to us.
One of the experiences I particularly remember (and bring to mind if, at any time, I begin to doubt myself - as everyone does occasionally) is this: my beloved sister died, and I was just consumed with grief. We used to disagree about 'life after death', and she would laugh at me, saying, "It's not true. When you're dead, you're dead."
During the course of my (Reiki) work, I met a Spiritual Healer, and while discussing the similarities of our healing, she suddenly said, "Ooh, I've got a lady with me, and I'm sorry to interrupt, but I must tell you now, because she's very angry and insistent! She's saying, 'Stop your bloody crying! You know this! You bloody know!' "
The Spiritualist then said, "Sorry about the swearing - but they're her words, not mine." Yes, they would be her words - that's exactly how my sister would have shouted at me!
It makes me smile now to remember this. But it was a great help to me at that difficult time. (And I can see how angry my crying would have made her, after all my years of trying to convince her of 'life after death'.)
How wonderful, thank you for sharing Smileless
I had a near death experience about 40 years ago. Mr. S. and I were engaged and I was living in temporary accommodation with my mum. There was a gas fire in the living room which it turned out had a blocked flue.
We were both feeling very tired not long after we'd had our tea so my mum took our dog, a pekingese, out for a walk and I cleared up. Not long after her return I collapsed, unconscious and when she was trying to bring me round she also passed out.
Our little dog licked at her face until she came round, she still couldn't wake me up and went outside to try and get some help. She was waving down cars but thinks they thought she was drunk as she was staggering due to carbon monoxide poisoning. Eventually someone stopped and an ambulance was called.
I could hear her voice but couldn't answer and then I was looking down on us both. Suddenly I was surrounded by the purest, whitest light I've ever seen. I felt as if I was floating and there was this incredible feeling of peace and love.
It was so wonderful that I just wanted to stay there and then I heard a voice call my name and tell me that it wasn't my time so I had to go back. I was very ill, the hospital told my mum and Mr. S. that they couldn't say if I'd make it through the night. The carbon monoxide had affected my central nervous system.
Later that year, mum and I went to London where our little dog received a gold medal for life saving from Barbara Woodhouse. If he hadn't kept licking at mum's face, something she'd never allowed him to do and he never did again, neither of us would have woken up and we'd have both died.
He was a small dog, and as the fumes were above him, he'd not been affected.
There are some very lovely and thought provoking posts on this thread.
I've just finished reading 'Dying to be Me' by Anita Moorjani, in which she describes her Near Death Experience. Still trying to get my head around her report of the 'Hereafter'. Very interesting book.
nigglynellie I have 3 grandchildren, who I love dearly. But the youngest (now 5) seems 'special' to me in some way. I don't love her any more than the other two, but there is something different about her!
It's very hard to explain ... we are more tactile with each other - always holding hands, or sitting comfortably together. There is a physical connection between us. And always has been, since she was born.
And something more: sometimes, when we are laughing together, looking into each other's eyes, I get the sense of somebody else being there, behind her eyes. It's a very odd sensation, and as I said before, very hard to explain.
I've come to the conclusion that she is the reincarnation of someone I've loved in a past life.
And we have this little time together on Earth, to be with, and love each other again.
My mother, whom I loved dearly, certainly had an almost uncanny affinity with my son, and he with her. He looks very like my dead father, and although both grandchildren were treated exactly the same and given the same affection there was just something that you couldn't put your finger on, it wasn't favouritism, but it was...... something!
nigglienellie - a similar thing happened to me. My mother died on 22/02/2002 and my first grandson was born 23/ 02 2002.
I'm still looking for similarities - he's 16 now, and a very complex character. Like Mum.
Steve Dyer, a Scientist, wrote in 1986:
A body will certainly become lighter after death, depending on the means of death and time since death. That should be obvious.
Simple intuition would say a shot or stabbed body will lose weight from blood loss.
Similarly, in cases of poisoning, vomiting can reduce weight. This may continue after death as the poison caused the stomach to spasm. A body does not necessarily die “all at once”.
More drastic weightless may occur in burn victims. With skin integrity compromised, fluid loss is expected. Think weeping blisters etc. You will also rapidly lose weight if you kept burning…
After death, muscle relaxation can cause firstly the bladder to empty, and later, the bowel. Bloating will result in fluid or content loss from any orifice.
Last but not least, bodies dehydrate (mummify) and/or decompose (liquify) and are consumed after death.
Any soul, consciousness or whatever is not composed of matter and it's loss will not be measured weightwise.
On a lighter note, yes, die and “fall” out of a spacecraft and you will be weightless after death. Similarly if you die and fall into water — particularly those who think jumping from a plane or off a bridge into water is a good idea — you will weigh less after death as you weigh less in water.
A scientist in 1907 had suggested that a person loses 21 gram in weight when they die.
I believe we die, that's it. I don't believe in anything afterwards at all. I don't believe in God, heaven, spirits, or anything like that.
Because my father died a few weeks before I was born my mother believed that our souls had met, his from earth on his way to heaven, mine from heaven on my way to earth; which I suppose that although we know the soul is the final thing to leave the body, it is also the final thing to enter your body on birth. I'm not awfully sure but she was and I think it was a comfort.
When my DGD was almost 2 she wanted to know about Christmas. My DD began to tell her the story of Jesus's birth, as she was explaining she said, "well, you know Jesus", and was interrupted by GD who said, "I don't know Jesus, but I know God". Then, in a wistful voice, "Heaven".
My DD is not religious, and had never spoken to GD about Jesus or God. I believe that little children have some memory of Heaven for a while after they are born.
Told no not tools
When my son died as a small boy as soon as it happened I felt a wonderful presence in the room with us ( not sure if others felt it) and knew that Jesus had come to get him. He also knew that he was going to die and said once during his treatment "Do people come back when they die" when he was tools no he said " How will you manage without me" but he wasn't distressed. After he died twice I was aware of his presence when I was on my own, although I couldn't see him and the once occasion I heard his voice. I believe absolutely I will see him again and I'm not afraid of dying.
annie I think the same as you. What is the point of all that love and depth of feeling if death meant the end of it.
I believe very much the same Day6. I have and still am struggling to come to terms with my beloved daughters death but my faith and belief in God didn’t fade or my belief that the ‘ever open arms ‘ held her when she went into the river . I long for her physical presence but I know the love we had for each other didn’t end that day.
This thread is very interesting and so many lovely thoughts and ideas have been expressed.
I firmly believe there is more. I firmly believe my prayers have been heard and answered and at times of deep sorrow when I was totally engulfed in grief so much so that I was beside myself and in utter despair I believe angels visited me, wrapped me in their wings and completely soothed my body which was wracked with grief and in utter torment. Oh I know some will scoff but if a surreal yet wonderful thing occurs it is an experience that is never forgotten. I have friends and family members I have discussed these occurrences with who dismiss them as the mind playing tricks, a sort of self-deception. I can only tell them it happened to me and left a lasting impression.
I also had an out of body experience many years ago. It was an amazing, awesome happening. ( No drugs involved!
) I am convinced now that we are spirits having a human experience.
I fell out of love with organised religion many years ago, believing God is good, omnipresent, omnipotent and will hear us wherever we are.
I have a deep faith there is more, much more and that our spirit will live on. I still feel extremely connected to those I loved who have passed on. I think they are still around.
Cynics will be cynical and that's ok. My beliefs are steadfast because of the amazing and incredible experiences I have had. I feel extremely honoured and privileged to have had them, almost as a confirmation I am on the right track and spiritual in nature. I think sometimes that divide between the living and the dead can cross over. I am not a medium and I have never been to a spiritualist gathering.
Mostly I keep quiet about my convictions. They don't make sense to many. I just feel incredibly lucky to know there is more to life than our time in this early realm.
Our spirit, our essence, whatever you like to call it, lives on. Knowing that, death holds no fears for me.
I had a similar experience as a previous poster when my mother was dying.
During the last two weeks of her life she kept seeing dead relatives and talking to them if they were in the room ie her parents and brother, but for some reason never my father.
Two of my sisters and I were sitting with her when she suddenly called out the name of one of her granddaughters-my niece and daughter of my sister-who had died very suddenly the previous year.
The strange thing about that was that our mother had severe dementia for years and was not told of her granddaughter's death as she had stopped all comprehension of anything.
I also remember dying patients (I worked as a nurse for many years) seeing dead relatives while in their last few days. My late MIL also did this just before she died. She kept calling out and talking to her father and brothers who were long dead. She was just two years old when her mother died and had no memory of her, and so never called for her.
It is my belief, from experiencing this, that your previously deceased relatives come for you when ypor soul leaves your body.
In the Bible there is a passage of scripture where god condems the pagan practices of child sacrifice by fire. What a hypocrite God would be if he tortured people in a fiery hell fire. The greek word for hell is Hades and this means the grave. When we die we all go to the grave ( like Jesus) and one day God promises to resurrect or bring back to life on a paradise earth good people.
When my mum was near the end of her life..in hospital..the whole family,me siblings, partners, grandchildren where at her bedside.. every one left except me,my brother &his wife..we were talking to mum when she tried to sit up..she put her hand out in front of her while looking towards the end of the bed and said " NO not yet"..it was obvious from her face that she had seen something... she passed away a few hours later in her sleep..she lives on in each of us..we all remember her with love, she was (is) part of who we all are..her genes will go on and on through the pyramid that families make in their extension...to me that is the afterlife..the ONGOING....
