A thoughtful poem annie. Watched my own church’s service by video this morning and it was strangely lovely. Wish I could have been in church but this simple service to which so many had contributed was lovely. A joyous day for us all. Christ is risen indeed.

Thought I’d post this here for those who may not know that the Brompton Oratory is posting Easter music (and services) online:
www.bromptonoratory.co.uk/recorded-music-for-holy-week-and-easter

It isn’t about Easter Indifference as per the thread title but I hope no-one minds.

That’s so interesting Eloethan. I think he would indeed be heartened by the way so many are supporting others this particular Easter period.

Anniebach - I read this ages ago but it’s good to be reminded of it. Very apt. Thank you.

And Happy Easter to you all.

I really like that song Greymar.

What is stopping you continuing with your prayers and meditation Anniebach? It was you who introduced the poem and I was reflecting on what I'd read about the person who wrote it.

Greymar Sun 12-Apr-20 13:37:40

Here is a song I like. It may not be to everybodys taste so please don't attack me if it's not for you.

it is called " What if God were one of us"

With respect may we allow this thread to continue with prayers and meditation on the resurrection of Jesus Christ

I hadn't heard of this gentleman so looked him up on Wikipaedia. It seems to me that, like Jesus, he was a rebel who was not a great fan of the established church and its pious preachers.

"Having been converted to Christian socialism and pacifism during the war, he wrote Lies (1919), Democracy and the Dog-Collar (1921) (featuring such chapters as "The Church Is Not a Movement but a Mob", "Capitalism is Nothing But Greed, Grab, and Profit-Mongering" and "So-Called Religious Education Worse than Useless")............ He moved to work for the Industrial Christian Fellowship, for whom he went on speaking tours of Britain.

"His appointment as missioner for ICF released him from routine clerical duties to become an outspoken advocate for the working classes.

"It was on one of these tours that he was taken ill. He died in Liverpool on 8 March 1929, exhausted at the age of 45. .....The Dean of Westminster refused burial at Westminster Abbey, because he said Studdert Kennedy was a "socialist", even though he had distrusted most politicians and had refused to join any political party."

I think this man, who appears to have been reviled by the established church, would be very heartened to see the many, many people who are doing their utmost to help those who need help. Yes, there are those who deny poverty and hunger and who say those that experience it have only themselves to blame. But there are also many people who do not just "look the other way".

Eater Sunday, Christ has risen from the tomb, sing Alleluia.

Wherever you so may be in the darkness call out His name to all and hopefully bring as many to the Light to share in His love for mankind.

Blessings celebrate this day.

Poem written by Geoffrey Studdert Kennedy. I love it when people post poetry, but we should credit the poet. Studdert Kennedy was nicknamed ‘Woodbine Willie” because he gave cigarettes to soldiers during WW1. He went on to become a pacifist, and to minister in London where he was a pioneer of urban and industrial mission.

Was that by Woodbine Willie Annie?

Septimia Sun 12-Apr-20 11:17:58

Thank you Annie, thought-provoking indeed. It's a bit like that other poem, "Preparations", which suggests that Christ wouldn't get much of a welcome today.

I've just joined in with the 10am singing of Easter hymns from the doorstep (except I opened the windows and thumped out the tunes on the piano). Then we watched our vicar's Easter Day service on FaceBook.

So, despite all the difficulties, in this house Christ is Risen, Alleluia!

"Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me."
Matthew 25:40

When Jesus came to Golgotha, they hanged Him on a tree,
They drave great nails through hands and feet, and made a Calvary;
They crowned Him with a crown of thorns, red were His wounds and deep,
For those were crude and cruel days, and human flesh was cheap.

“When Jesus came to Birmingham, they simply passed Him by.
They would not hurt a hair of Him, they only let Him die;
For men had grown more tender, and they would not give Him pain.
They only just passed down the street, and left Him in the rain.

“Still Jesus cried, ‘Forgive them, for they know not what they do,’
And still it rained the winter rain that drenched Him through and through;
The crowds went home and left the streets without a soul to see.
And Jesus crouched against a wall, and cried for Calvary.”
