I just spent a delightful hour listening and watching various groups and individuals singing the old hymns we were brought up with. Absolutely wonderful and my husband also liked it (he is not a believer but he said it affected him spiritually. Yay. )

Nanna8. I went on You Tube today to listen to choirs singing hymns and other choral music. I rnjoyed it so much smd sang along. Tonight i am in bed watching all kinds of music and singing along. My dogs think i am going barmy! I. find i do a lot of crying hearing the old trad hymns. I think crying and old age go together. I am glad i sm not alone in realising how good You Tube is stirring
memories!

Great is Thy Faithfulness is a favourite, although it was my mother's favourite, so sad too.

I looked for the hymn "I heard the voice of Jesus say," just the other day. The tune is by Vaughn Williams and is one of my favourite hymns. It isn't sung very often these days.

‘It is Well With My Soul’. Has always been a hymn dear to my heart.

We used to sing these old hymns in school assembly and I still love them although I stopped being christian at age 11.

The beautiful Welsh hymns, so very nostalgic, gets me right to my heart. So do the hymns from school age, soul of my saviour, bring flowers of the rarest. Lots of different hymns that we sang and they all take me back to simpler happy days

Something else I used to enjoy was the traditional British folk songs. We were taught songs from the four countries which make up the UK. These are part of our heritage but are no longer taught in schools.

I love those British folkies too and especially the Scottish ones. Love the Corries, they were wonderful.

My favourite was ‘Hills of the North Rejoice’ so rousing and not dirge like.
Often when stressed, I listen to Gregorian chant and plainsong,
calms me down.

‘It is Well With My Soul’. Has always been a hymn dear to my heart.

Me too, have it on a playlist along with 'The Day Thou Gavest Lord is ended'.

Hollysteers I like that hymn too I also love and listen often to Gregorian chant and Taize. Must look up plainsong.

The background to ‘It is Well with my Soul’ is very sad. I always think of that poor man losing his children at sea and his business in a fire.

I often ask Alexa to play hymns - she has a great playlist

Anniebach Sat 09-Sept-23 12:40:25

I didn’t think of Alexa, so thank you, I have just listened to
Myfanwy and Calon LAN ,
