I'm so sorry to hear about your friend TopsyIrene06. Such a sad loss must have been very hard for you.
Book Title by Their Authors (Parlour Game)
Now here is a truly brave woman, who has put her career on the line here, as a true Christian who really understands what Christianity is about.
Trump, Malania, Vance and families, were just trapped there, and could not walk out or stop her. Stunning and so full of humanity.

It was ecxellent speech!
I have just read this thread again.
I had a very good friend who knew they were in the wrong body and couldn't understand why.
They were found in the river one sad, sad morning.
The Archbishop was simply asking for compassion, that's all. Not everyone is lucky enough to live the perfect life or to have the strength to cope if they feel they are different.
I do understand Norah, thank you. Still not representative.

So Edgar is her maiden name, fair enough. Still did not like her speech it is obviously what she thinks. The number just over 1% of her Episcopal church is correct just google. But I will leave it, what they want in America is up to them. You have your opinions on Transgender and I have mine.
Out of interest, you do understand that 1% as a part of 337million people is 3.37million people, correct? Episcopal is one of a vast range of Protestant Christian Churches in USA.
The Bishop was preaching compassion for our fellow humans. This is her job - spreading the word of Jesus.
Christians are exhorted to care for all, regardless of whom they might be.
Would you prefer she offered a different message, such as despise others who don't think like you, or maybe a little bit of hate?

You are making yourself look very foolish. First you accuse this woman if being trans _ wrong. Then you say her name is a male name when her surname isn't gendered. You really need to stop digging or you are going to hit Australia.
You are giving us a laugh on a fairly miserable morning so perhaps it is worth you carrying on.

I've said nothing whatsoever on transgender issues so you are assuming what I think.
I agree with her message about compassion.

Edgar is not a woman's name. However I can see a lot of you on here are very supportive if Transgender do leave you to it. Hear the Catholic Church are going to get involved with their record of child abusive Priests , supported by the church, and the selling of babies and work house laundries for poor mothers.
In your post you called the Bishop Marion Buddy then said she has a man's name.
Marion is either a girls' or boys' name (as we all may know, John Wayne's real name was Marion but it was changed by film producers as it was too 'girly').
It's a derivative of Mary.
Thanks for the explanation of the name Edgar Mamie.
Allsorts post was disingenuous, quite misleading in fact.
Yes, Norah I agree. Straightforward Christian values like "love thy neighbour as thyself. Matt. 22 Verses 34 to 40

I am not sure that the percentage of people having a particular religion/view is relevant when issues of conscience are concerned.
In times when the majority of the population thought black people were sub-human,, and slavery was accepted as a normal part of life, people like the Quakers fought against that view and were thought of as busy-bodies and cranks by most people. When Hitler first started spouting his hatred, a large proportion of the population, at least initially, applauded it. Soon, even those who were beginning to have grave reservations, were too frightened to express them.
Even if this woman only represents a small proportion of the population, that does not invalidate her views. In the present febrile atmosphere in the USA, I admire her for her bravery.
Indeed. Perhaps I misunderstood Allsorts.
However, I believe, as a Christian-Catholic, the Bishop was preaching tolerance, love, empathy, kindness. Yes, conscience.

The church Marion Buddy represents to only 1% of the USA population hardly represents the USA I think her agenda is transgender rights, so that would please others that do. She has a mans name, it is reported she is married with children. It all seems very staged and I dont think it helped women at all.
The number 1% is very misleading. The USA is 73% Christian.
Catholics 23%
Protestants 49% - only about half are evangelical and other half include religions as Methodist, Presbyterian, Episcopal, etc.
Bishop of Washington is an Episcopalian Christian. Well done her.
Mormon 1%
Jewish 2%
Other faiths and no faith 25%
Searched, am unable to quote Wiki.

Edgar was her surname before she married Paul Budde. Her name is Mariann.

She has a mans name
It's a woman's name too, it's gender-neutral but usually thought of as a girls' name. The spelling varies.
If only 1% of the USA is Anglican and the majority are members of the more extremist mega churches in the USA then that really says something about the population there.

Brave lady and not an idiot.

I wonder what Musk thinks of Trump's stance on transgender - hasn't he got a transgender child?
Musk is estranged from his trans child. That episode was one that drove him further towards the right.
Well said Luckygirl.

The problem with Trump's strident pronouncements is that they have no nuance, no subtlety. We all know that the problems of young people struggling to understand the muddle they might feel about their gender and sexuality need gentle handling and understanding. That little is black and white. Whipping up hatred achieves nothing positive.
The problem of immigration and how this should be handled is not black and white. Every potential immigrant is an individual - they might be fleeing persecution, they might be seeking a better life, they might be criminal drug-runners, they might be people with skills that we need. Whipping up blanket hatred achieves nothing positive.
Intelligent debate and research is what is needed.
The sort of soundbites that we see in the media and sometimes on this site do not help and cause distress and danger to genuine law-abiding and sometimes vulnerable fellow human beings. For instance "Shocking news this morning" is nothing of the sort - we learn only that immigration is a longstanding problem (we all know that), that the previous government failed to deal with it as it is a huge challenge for any administration, and that this new government is trying to find ways to solve the problems that exist. Not "shocking news" at all, but a good way to whip up hatred and encourage simplistic thinking.
It is all very sad.
Excellent post Luckygirl because you identify that blanket legislation and whipping up hatred benefits none of us in the long run.

Very good post Luckygirl .. the voice of reason and compassion as always,
I watched Newsnight last night and was horrified by an interview with a DACA young man who might now be deported despite being married to an American and having 4 children.. It seems inhuman that these people who thought they were safe under an agreement made by Barack Obama might have that recinded by Trump..
Yes we heard all those phrases - dog whistle etc when we were fighting for single sex spaces, an investigation into the clinics, etc luckily the feminists just ignored it and got on with the task in hand.
I hope other Church leaders step up soon.
