Maybe more prayers needed?

Luckygirl3 Sun 08-Mar-26 13:13:51

Well, if I do go to church, which I admit is not often, the vicar prays for peace in all the trouble spots in the world and for the people living there. He prays that leaders may be given wisdom

Not a lot of success yet it would seem .... sad

Prayer isn't just asking for things. It is also thanking God for the good things in life. Our leaders need our prayerful support. Compared to the rest of the world the UK is a peaceful place to live and we are very fortunate. The troubled parts of the world need our prayer and anything practical we can do to ease their suffering.

This post is about 2 things: religion and the state of the country.
I definitely think that this country is in a bad way in many respects.

Lovely post Luckygirl3.

That is so true Oreo.
'A blessing is preferable to a cursing.'

Well, if I do go to church, which I admit is not often, the vicar prays for peace in all the trouble spots in the world and for the people living there. He prays that leaders may be given wisdom and I'd pray for that too.

This country is, at present, not one of the trouble spots, thank goodness.

Allira Sun 08-Mar-26 12:10:55

I'm praying that the potholes might all be filled in soon, that the LAs and Highways Agencies will receive guidance on the right way to go about this.

This government is steadily working to improve public services - Sure Start mark 2 is on the way and youth services are to be revived.

The NHS is struggling but I have just paid nothing for a pacemaker, a stent and an ablation.

They are fighting the backlog of the chaos wrought by privatisation and need time to unpick this.

But I do not think the UK needs praying for. It needs celebrating - I am so frustrated that the government PR machine is doing such a bad job of trumpeting its reforms and leaves the negativity free reign.

By all means pray for the poor souls in the Middle East or in Ukraine. Or even the US where decency is being rapidly eroded and normal kind people are being quashed.

The UK is not without its problems and its rich/poor divide is a source for concern; but truly it is not all bad.

I am looking out on a soft misty morning with the daffodils and primulas in bloom and the hills in the background and the birds singing - secure in a small but comfortable home with sufficient to live on.

We need to celebrate the UK and all it has to offer sometimes.

It’s funny though I know people who aren’t religious but always say please god, or thank god, or the lord if something is going bad, or good for them.

I say hello to my dads bereavement card every morning, not exactly pray, but ask him to watch after certain members of my family.

A blessing is preferable to a cursing.

When our nephew died aged 16, people would say to his dad, my brother, 'I'll pray for him'. My brother would say 'Pray to who? Please yourself but there's no one there'. This family had that nonsense knocked out of us long ago.

I am contrary I describe myself as atheist but am probably agnostic and on occasion have prayed to a higher being which I see as religion-less. Can’t stand religion of any kind. But when my DH was in hospital desperately ill 15 months ago people I knew prayed for him and lit candles and I really drew comfort from this.
So if people need to pray 🙏🏾 that is what they must do, and I can see how that can be a comfort and give people a sense of community.

ginny Sun 08-Mar-26 11:35:57

All the prayers in the world won’t help while there are still greedy, violent self loving people .

fancythat Sun 08-Mar-26 11:31:41

Each to his own.

I dont pray for people who dont want to be prayed for.

paddyann54 Sun 08-Mar-26 11:25:03

I do t believe in any gods I would rather you didn’t pray for me or mine
Any higher being who lets his creation get into this mess should be sacked immediately.
I sacked them in my teens
I find people who offer to pray a wee bit creepy.

fancythat Sun 08-Mar-26 11:16:33

Maybe I should start another thread and leave the politics bit out of it!

These are the Bible verses

Based on 1 Timothy 2:1-4, believers are urged to pray for all people, specifically kings and those in authority, to promote a peaceful, godly, and dignified life. This type of intercession is considered good and pleasing to God, who desires for everyone to be saved and know the truth

Well said merlotgran. One of our main problems imo is the endless focus on complaining. Of course we have a need to invest improve our public services, including nhs. Look around us, our public services are stretched but they’re functioning.
The schools my grandchildren attend are safe, happy places. I can moan that suppor for eg dyslexia or adhd could be better but it’s there and the teachers care about the children. Not easy for them with say 8 out of 30 with Send.

NHS - still fantastic with acute need, struggling with chronic

That’s🥰

Grandmabatty Sun 08-Mar-26 11:04:56

I don't agree that we are in a bit of a state but pray if you want to.

Georgesgran Sun 08-Mar-26 11:02:11

Like many here, I’ve no faith, but if it makes you feel better fancythat crack on!

merlotgran Sun 08-Mar-26 10:54:08

I think most of us can agree that the Uk is in a bit of a state.

Is it?

Compared to many other countries right now I think we’re not doing too badly.
Maybe we should count our blessings instead.

fancythat Sun 08-Mar-26 10:13:17

The Uk needs praying for. In my opinion.

I am as guilty as the next Christan probably, in neglecting this. Maybe more so.

Whichever side of Politics someone is on, I think most of us can agree that the Uk is in a bit of a state.
