New way to report Scams.

I have the numbers of close friends/family and business associates on my white list. Only they can get right through. I dont answer calls from unknown numbers. I google them first and if that throws up a number from someone I have genuinely dealt with I ring them back. Otherwise I block the number.

If its really important and genuine there is something called the post.

Yes I’ve got it in my phone under check if real did Martin Lewis mention it if I remember correctly. I think that’s where I got it from lol

There will always be scammers trying to get your hard-earned. If it’s an email click on the top where it shows the sender, the email address should give you some idea if it is genuine.

I’ve had some recently regarding deliveries that cannot be made or my address has been lost (?) Or I need to pay excess charges. Sometimes the use of language is the giveaway in itself.

I occasionally get the calls about my recent car accident, and yes, I too am going to be arrested for not paying my taxes. (Question - why does the caller have an (automated) American accent?).

When I recently had a call from the state pension service my first question was “how do I know you are who you say you are?”
The caller was able to give me my unique security number with no problem and was was very happy to go through this. Sadly we have to be suspiciously self-defensive, and give no information about ourselves to strangers, they get your full details one piece at a time. (This reminds me of being told, as a child to never talk to strangers.)

Nothing really changes.

Why are we still getting so many if by reporting them it’s doing some good ?

An American lady on the phone has told me that a warrant is out for my arrest as I have committed fraud. I hope this is a scam.

I just ignore them if I reported every phone scam I d be on the phone half the day So I never have reported one Does it really make any difference ??

Actually no. Mum and dad have gone so no calls about them. The rest of the family wouldn’t call until the morning if they had any alarming news or emergency and due to Covid we wouldn’t be able to help anyway. Additionally we still have a landline.

159 is the memorable, secure number that connects you directly to your bank if you think you’re being scammed.

159 works in the same way as 101 for the police or 111 for the NHS. It’s the number you can trust to get you through to your bank, every time.

159 will never call you. Only a fraudster will object to you calling 159.

You can Forward scam emails to:

They always acknowledge but do not send the result of their inquiries.

The Information Commissioners office will take details of nuisance phone calls

What bank? So many have closed. My so called branch is 6 miles away and no direct bus route.

Absolutely, all the branches that were nearby are closed, now have to go right into the city, risking Covid, just to get coins.

When I left school I chose a bank that had a branch right by my workplace, not twenty miles away

I had a call purportedly from Sky one time. Sounded rather suspicious so I rang the number in my paperwork for Sky and it turned out that the guy I spoke to there had been contacted by the exact same scammers himself a couple of weeks previously. Even after he told them he worked for Sky they still tried to con him...

In the couple of years before she died, my elderly (and easily confused) mother was the recipient of several of these calls. Luckily, I lived with her and just took over answering the phone. I dread to think what might have happened if she'd been living on her own.

I think I would play safe and phone my bank on another number.

I'd be very wary of that, it's probably a scam. Did they ask for account details etc to check for you????? Be very very careful.

Or better still don’t answer phone and forward the number to 7726 like I’ve showed you. You should also turn your phone off completely and wait two mins before you turn back on. before you do all these things. Because if it was a fake number you have just given them all that they need by giving bank details and password etc. and try using a different device to log into your bank

You can report calls on your mobile and block the number so it can’t call again. I also turn my phone to mute when I go to bed and then switch the sound back on when I get up. You can also set your phone to do this. Then you won’t be woken up.

I usually write the number down and then look on the websites like "who calls me", etc. If a lot of people get calls they can report it so you know if it's a scam. Also look on the Which.com website.

Oh dear, henetha. Should you not have made sure that you had an escape route planned before you did whatever you did? I hope that when you get out of prison (in America?) you organise things better the next time.
