Smart meter scam.

Yet another scam. An unsolicited phone caller (sometimes with a foreign accent but not always) who tells you that they are from British Gas and they need an appointment to install or update or replace your smart meter, or that there is some problem with your Gas meter which they need to access. When asked to confirm your account number or otherwise give proof that they are genuine they ring off. I put the number into the search box at who-called.co.uk and got this result. You may be phoned by a different number, but you can always use Whocalled to check if it is a known scammer.
