Scams and fraud

Someone has just phoned me…

…and said because of my health conditions I am eligible for a free pendant thingy. I was furious. I asked who he was, what company her worked for, what his phone number was and what right had he got to access my health records. Also pointing out that I don’t have any health conditions. I can’t check the number in case it’s one of those that scam you out of money if you dial 1. Has anyone else had a call like this? So intrusive and worrying….

For heaven’s sake, just put the phone down if you don’t want to speak to them.

Apologies for being so pathetic but I just wanted to know if anyone else had had a call from the same people ( that’s me told…).

If you put the number into who-called.co.uk/ you can see whether others have been called by the same people. It's a very useful tool, both for checking calls that you receive and for warning others... 🙂

Ooh I love scam callers. I let one guy talk to me about conservatories. He spent ages talking me through the process, the cost etc. I said was very interested… oh by the way (I said) I’m assuming that the fact that I live on the 19th floor makes no difference….
Beeeeeeeeep.

Check the number on the internet, which will tell you whether it is a genuine number or one that is used for scams.

I don’t want to dial 1471 as those scam calls tell you to dial 1 and then charge you a fortune. I always dial my mobile number after I’ve had a scam call. I’m just so angry at the cheek of it!

Dialling 1 cannot cost you a fortune. Scammers use automatic diallers, so if you press 1 ( or any number really) when prompted, all it does is tell the automatic dialler that it’s a live number with a real person at the other end, so it may call again. That is bad enough, but safest just to ignore any number you don’t recognise. Same goes for having a bit of sport with the caller ( and I am guilty of this), it just keeps your number in the dialler.

I had a similar call last week - presumably a new company set up. He asked if I knew what a pendant was and I said I was well aware what one was and if I thought I needed one I was perfectly capable of doing my own research and organising it for myself!

I'd have answered that yes, I knew what a pendant was, and I had a pendant light hanging in the centre of each of my rooms.

It’s same type of cold calling as ones saying you’ve had an accident when you haven’t. They hope to strike lucky. Just ignore them.

Strangwendy Thu 18-Apr-24 11:38:05

I had a phone call very similar saying he was a health worker and again was trying to sell me something I just very firmly told him to push off!

It might have been a genuine business 'cold call'. The 'free' pendant might have been an offer but then you are charged a weekly fee to have the system set up and monitored. My mother was charged £50 to replace her lost pendant. We suspect it went out in the newspaper recycling.

Dialling 1471 costs nothing to find out the number.

Obviously you wouldn't phone back, just search the number online and you can find out if it's a scammer.

Doesn’t the ‘1’ mean you’ve dialled ‘1’ though and might cost a lot of money? At least I’ll be prepared if I get the same call again. It just took me totally by surprise, especially as I was expecting a call from someone else.

flappergirl Tue 16-Apr-24 19:41:10

As per pp, if it was the last call you can 1471 and find out the number. It doesn't cost anything and won't connect you to anyone. You can then put the number in google and see who it is.

My guess is you're on a giant list of people over 60 and eventually they will find someone with health problems. People's details are easy to harvest these days and are used for marketing purposes.

When I used to get the insurance scam

about your recent car accident

I always replied with which one?

^ Are you referring to the one where I was three times over the limit or high on cocaine mixed with ketamine^

They rang off quickly, sometimes after a few choice expletives.

BlueBelle Tue 16-Apr-24 18:52:20

I tend to have a bit of fun with them too

Whethertomorrow Tue 16-Apr-24 18:44:42

I absolutely love a scam call. I try to keep them talking to me for as long as possible, it’s such fun. There are a lot of scam buster videos on YouTube, highly clever people who corrupt the computers of scammers. Very informative and alarming at how stupid people are at being sucked in.

Beechnut Tue 16-Apr-24 15:03:29

ferry and Astitchintime 🤣🤣

Jaxjacky Tue 16-Apr-24 14:53:49

I just don’t answer unless it’s a local number, if it’s important, they’ll leave a message.
I get very few on my mobile and haven’t had a landline for years.

Gwyllt Tue 16-Apr-24 14:46:53

For not got

Gwyllt Tue 16-Apr-24 14:46:32

A while ago I knew someone who when they received a scam call handed the phone over to her mother who had dementia. Initially she sounded quite sensible and it kept her occupied got some time. She was always amazed how long she could keep them going got

Astitchintime Tue 16-Apr-24 14:07:05

I had a call recently from the 'Retired Workers Association' who stated that, as I had worked in a very noisy industry I was eligible to claim for loss of hearing. I asked the caller to repeat what they'd said, she went through her script again, I asked her to repeat, she went through the script again........she finally got the message and hung up grin

cornergran Tue 16-Apr-24 14:06:32

Had a call telling me my house was known to be damp. Really? I politely thanked the caller and asked him to put details in writing whereupon he asked for my address😂😂
