Scams and fraud

Oh, dear, I repeated a hoax on FB and got my knuckles rapped.

So yesterday I saw a letter on a FB page, said to originate from a head of state in a country not my own, and shared it on my own page. This morning I have a message from Google.
Apparently:-
Independent fact-checkers reviewed the photo and said that it was false. 11 Feb 2025

Facebook added a notice to the post. 11 Feb 2025

and People who repeatedly share false information might have their posts moved lower in News Feed so other people are less likely to see them. though I have seen many bits of worse false information repeated ad nauseam on Facebook.

Obviously the factcheckers consider my contribution is more dangerous than most. Therefore, I am adding a link below to the factcheckers' page about this hoax, so that my Gransnet friends can avoid repeating it. Do read it carefully.

I couldn't get on to Facebook this morning, I just kept going round in circles, putting in log in details time and again then they'd disappear. I had to change my password then could log on.

I've never had an exemption nor has DH - are we due a refund?
😀

Is this a Hoax

The last few days it’s been announced all over the press that over 70s are to loose their exemption to road tax

Have I been missing this exemption I can find no freference to it in official publications or forms or is it a hoax

I am in the same position. I have no idea what I had written that could be deemed offensive and find it unusual that they do not advise you so you can argue your case.

Totally agree but as we say they are just bots, no actual people behind the screens at least you never ever get to speak with one. So frustrating and quite frankly a disgusting way to run a business.

Yesterday I posted 2 blood pressure monitors for sale on Market Place on a new FB account and immediately had a message to say it was against the guide lines. These items have never been a problem prior to META taking over in January.

I was ticked off for a TikTok post answering a Disney Question with the word Dumbo. I was told it was against Community Guidelines. On another note, I thought FB had stopped fact checking things now.

FB has become ridiculous since META took over. On market place I advertised a Security floor mat, the photo was of an elderly lady sitting fully dressed on the side of the bed ready to step on this mat. I got banned for 6 months and now my account has completely disappeared. I have tried to appeal but am just speaking with bots and have no way of appealing unless I can log in to the account and prove what happened. How can I when they deleted it. FB no longer recognises my log in details.

Facebook have lists of words that trigger an automatic reprimand to be sent to the poster of them. VVV posts Victorian drawings and photographs and so on, and adds very entertaining text beside them. She dispels cliches and myths and obviously is very knowledgeable about the era. She had one photo of a Victorian beauty in a voluminous pink dress deleted by FB, and she was threatened with being banned - because it was seen as a nude. Pink = skin = nude, even if it is an enormous frilly crinoline.

I once was banned for referring to myself, in humour as a “greedy 🐷🐽”

Sometimes I truly believe the world has gone bonkers.

I was banned for 24 hours for using the word 'hoe' as apparently it was offensive. It was a conversation about gardening!

I was told off at the beginning of Covid for something innocent, I shared about one of the Queens of France, well I don’t share anything now and I check what I receive.
I have complained several times about the amount of adverts and sponsor rubbish I have been receiving lately but to no avail.
I press delete ´never to see again’ but it is short lived. I also click on not to see advertising company’ but that is laughable.

Knittypamela Thu 13-Feb-25 15:20:52

I was rebuked by Facebook because I used the Irish slang term "eejit" instead of "idiot". I've no idea what they objected to.

Blinko Thu 13-Feb-25 15:15:45

I shared a joke piece about the orange one and have received a rather belated rebuke from the fb gestapo. 1984 or what?

I don't understand why people pass on information/warnings etc without taking a minute to fact check first. I see it every day and wonder why people find it so difficult to ensure the info is correct. It only takes a moment.

I've just read this and ended up confused!

I have trouble enough believing what trump has actually done, never mind any hoaxes.

There was another rumour... eu.usatoday.com/story/news/factcheck/2025/02/04/fabricated-quote-mexico-president-fact-check/78209801007/

There are probably lots more quotes claimed to be from her, with people posting what they would have said had they been her.

She seems a feisty woman, who wouldn't hesitate to reply to Trump, but she is also intelligent enough to do it with wit and humour.

nexus63 Thu 13-Feb-25 13:40:08

i will not read let alone share about this stupid man, my facebook only has family on it, so i very seldom get anything else on it.

Mojack26 Thu 13-Feb-25 13:30:53

We've all had them as 'it breaches their community guidelines' or their fact checkers have found it to be false.... I reposted a funny photo about Trump and the bleach thing during the pandemic. 🤣Got banned for 4 weeks for both the above! Tells all...

Whether she wrote that letter or not, (probably not, the original photo of it has vanished from the internet - but the text is still printed in full on the factfinding page) she wrote to Google about changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico.

"Gabe Hauari USA TODAY

"Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum says she sent a letter to Google asking the company not to comply with President Donald Trump's order to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America on its maps app.

Sheinbaum showed the letter to reporters during a news conference Thursday. She said that her letter to Google argues that the United States cannot unilaterally rename the body of water since it shares it with Cuba and Mexico. The Mexican government says the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea dictates that an individual country's sovereign territory only extends up to 12 nautical miles out from the coastline, she said.

“If a country wants to change the designation of something in the sea, it would only apply up to 12 nautical miles. It cannot apply to the rest, in this case, the Gulf of Mexico. This is what we explained in detail to Google,” Sheinbaum told reporters Thursday.

Sheinbaum also referenced a joke she previously made saying that if countries were going to start renaming things, perhaps the United States should be called "Mexican America," citing a map of the continent from 1607. Sheinbaum said her letter to Google asked the search engine to prominently display the map of Mexican America.

"We ask that when you put Mexican America in the search engine, the map appears that we presented," she said.

Google did not immediately respond to a USA TODAY request for comment Friday morning.
