Apple alert on iphone

I just had a pop up alert, flashing and complete with music. It had a convincing apple logo. The message was malware detected, my iPhone infected, press the link to stop all your information being stolen

I left the site. Google confirmed Apple never do this. Interesting though, what appeared to be a Facebook link advised checking into this kind of alert
