Loft insulation survey

I had a call from a company offering a free loft insulation survey, I fobbed him off by saying I would have to talk to my husband but he said he would call again. Is this a scam or is it a government scheme?

It might be fun to chat to these uninvited callers but beware as they can use part of your conversation to change what you said and make it seem that you have consented to something. Best to say nothing at all. Absolutely nothing and definitely not yes !

The calls are scams. Had quite a few then fir one call justcsaid I was moving house so not interestrd. Not had any calls for ages.

Rather than thinking up a reason why it’s not possible to have any work done on the house (it’s rented/listed etc) isn’t it good practice for us all just to say “not interested” and put the phone down ?
Or not say anything and just hang up ?

I know it’s ingrained in us all to be polite but that doesn’t apply to scammers!

Not strictly fraudulent ( although I guess some are). The council have a home improvement budget that gets used up within weeks of April 6th, so companies are looking for you to sign up for this with them so they can get the business, and charge you the difference.

I enjoy these calls I make up stories to put them off . When someone called Stephen called me I asked if it was our Stephen from France with the 6 children . He said it was and they were missing me . We both were amused by this .

For cold callers I always tell them I rent our property (I don’t) that way it cuts off any further discussion about how good their deal is where repeatedly telling them no spurs them on to further try and convince me

Scam.

I had a call re. Loft insulation, the company he claimed to be from was based in London but the number was Northern Ireland.

I miss my husband, he always used to say, “I’m not the home owner, I’m a burglar….”

Pilgrimandrew Sun 15-Feb-26 14:15:22

Don't necessarily dismiss this as a scam. It may well be, but if you don't have the required depth, (27cm) of loft insulation in your roof void, you may be entitled to a free top up. I got one via British Gas I recall

Only had landline to get broadband from company I wanted to use so hardly use it. Keep getting stupid calls though! Usually just hang up. Do answer it as my Doctors in spite of my frequent instructions still insist on calling me on my land line. Last call was from someone wanting to speak to the owner about loft insulation. Told him I would give him the local councils number as I live in a council property. He couldnt hang up fast enough. So at least one point to me!

My calls recently have been from "Ben" a well- spoken Antipodean (I think)
I might know him 😂

RosiesMawagain Sun 15-Feb-26 11:38:10

My calls recently have been from "Ben" a well- spoken Antipodean (I think)
He called 4 times last week, the first 3 I hung up, the last one I interrupted, said I had hung up on him 3 times but this time out of courtesy I was going to explain I was not interested but I appreciated it was his job however would he PLEASE not call this number again
Heard no more- at least from him!

harrigran Sun 15-Feb-26 09:44:47

I never answer my landline, I allow it to go to answer machine because 99.9% of calls are scams nowadays.
The scammers spoof legitimate numbers. The last few calls to my machine were German mobile numbers 🙄

I had a call this morning about housing repairs and damp proofing they’d suggested I’d reported. I don’t engage in any conversation with unsolicited callers. I assume they are scammers and I say nothing and hang up .

I googled the number of my caller after I hung up. It’s been reported hundreds of times in recent days and known to be from fraudulent scammers. Not sure how the scam works but presumably if you agree to work they’ll ask for bank details.

UK companies can get fined for making unsolicited calls to TPS numbers. They can be reported to the ICO (Information Commissioners Office)

joannapiano Fri 13-Feb-26 16:34:39

We often get calls from “Jo”, a lady who says she is the Energy Advisor for our area. Asking about our loft insulation. I have learnt to say we rent the house, and the call ends abruptly.

Allira Fri 13-Feb-26 15:09:38

Yes, I say "I'll ask the landlord/lady".

They end the call very quickly then

Charleygirl5 Fri 13-Feb-26 15:07:09

These days, when it suits, my house is rented and the landlord lives abroad. That usually gets rid of mainly double glazing merchants.

Allira Thu 12-Feb-26 23:23:41

BlueBelle

Well they are always ringing me and I don’t have a loft so I never engage

😂

Moonwatcher1904 Thu 12-Feb-26 23:03:51

We get these calls every now and again. I tell them we live on the top floor of a block of flats and the roof above us is a flat roof so no loft. That gets rid of them.

keepingquiet Thu 12-Feb-26 22:56:34

It's been a scam for years- don't be taken in. The get money from local councils for doing the 'survey' but no work is ever carried out.

I would contact your local housing dept.

Oreo Thu 12-Feb-26 22:48:52

We get them, it’s a company wanting to re insulate your loft, it’s a nuisance call not a scam.
The voices are British. There was a government drive to have lofts checked and if the insulation was very thin it was re insulated free of charge for pensioners .I expect most people have more than extremely thin insulation so then there was a charge.
If you don’t want it checked and to re insulate just tell them and put the phone down.

M0nica Thu 12-Feb-26 22:43:14

Our let out to all such calls is: Well, our house is Listed, we can do nothing to it without the cnsent of the local council.

Not entirely true. there is a lot we can do, including insulating the loft, but it does the trick, they ring off and presumably taake us off their list because we get far fewer calls like this these days compared with the past.

BlueBelle Thu 12-Feb-26 19:42:38

I've had calls from 'John' and a female, very well spoken, about loft insulation (I'm on a government list apparently which is unlikely because DH insulated the loft)
I m on the list too and I don’t have a loft I have attic rooms 🤣
