Possible (fake) BT scam, access to computer wanted

Most lunchtimes I receive a scam call from either Bank Security or BT Internet (supposedly). I got the BT one yesterday “hello ma’am this is BT regarding your internet connection.” Dead giveaway when they call you ma’am.

I said “no you’re not so you can f* off.” She then started saying “you can f* off too” as I slammed the phone down.
I had just had enough yesterday!

This is a really old one it’s been going on for years. Just leave them talking and walk away

I have said “Oh, hold on a minute, I’ll just call my husband to speak to you as he’s a BT engineer so will understand what you’re talking about better than me!” They immediately disconnect the call!
We’ve just got rid of our landline as only two relatives ever called on it, along with half the population of Indian scammers.

I've had scam calls from Indians pretending to be BT and telling me they can see my internet connection is public and they can help me to stop scammers accessing my computer. Sometimes I play along with them for a while by pretending I don't understand. BT have absolutely nothing to do with the way we get our internet so I know it is a scam call. When I get fed up of playing with them I tell them I know they are a scammer. Most don't like that but if I've kept them occupied for several minutes then they can't call someone else.

Something similar here. I put the phone right up against Radio 4Extra and went out for a while.

Never allow anyone access to your computer or phone. What they do is to install an app that then allows them to access everything including your bank account and before you know it they will have drained your account. They would also have access to your Amazon account so could order numerous expensive items such as mobile phones, thereby running up a huge credit card bill.
As others have said ignore the calls. You can have something called Call Protect installed from BT. This only allows calls through from those stored in your contacts . All other calls are monitored. An elderly relative has it and it works very well.

The remote access apps like Team. Viewer will allow scammers to watch what you are doing on your pc, they don’t automatically give them access to your ‘stuff’ without passwords etc. They would need to get you to log into your banking app and watch what you were doing.
I can’t think of any legitimate reason why anyone would need access to your computer.

I don't answer calls from unknown numbers. If the person really wants to communicate with me, they will leave a voicemail or message me some other way. It's easy enough to ring back, if it's a genuine caller.

I've been getting 2 or 3 calls everyday for the last few weeks from several different numbers telling me I am owed over £1000 for car finance. I've blocked all the numbers that keep ringing. At first I told them I didn't drive and didn't have a car and the second time I said I had an elephant that I only used occasionally. It didn't put them off and now they are all blocked but they still keep trying.
We are very wary now of numbers that ring that we don't know.

I once had a call from someone saying he needed to access my computer. I told him I didn't have one (although I do). Then had several minutes of him saying "yes you do" and me saying "no I don't" before he rang off

I know of a elderly lady who when receiving these type of call ask them for the pass code she has left with the provider as security, it works every time....

If the scammer says he is from BT I ask where they are based . When they quote a London address I ask a question about it like where is their nearest tube station . I then tell them BT do not have a bse in London any more .

I got rid of my land line and use only my mobile. This means I have no nuisance calls ever. The phone blocks any suspicious numbers.

Thank you for the replies so far everyone, I'd literally just got through the door after a long shift at work when the phone rang, absolutely knackered and off guard, but not so off guard I would let him (Indian accent) access my computer, I seem to be having a Summer of scammers !......

Quite right, welbeck, it's very annoying when somebody asks who you are when they have phoned you, and they haven't said who they are first! At least it hasn't happened to me so much since I stopped answering numbers I don't recognise. If anyone leaves a message I would be happy to phone them back, but strangely enough, the unknown callers never do.

Remember you don't have to be polite.

You are not at work representing a business.
Information is power.
Do not give any away.
In the old days when people answered the phone with their number I would often say nothing.
Occasionally I said hello. I never gave my number.
Some callers would demand it. I said you are the one calling what do you think it is.

There isn’t a lot you can do as your data is already circulating and being sold on the dark web. Best to ignore all calls from unrecognised numbers. If you become overwhelmed by the number of scam calls then change your phone number and email address.
