Climate Change

I would like to sugest that there be a continuous discussion on Climate Change in gransnet (i.e. not just for a few days or weeks) - in fact I have suggested to gransnet that there should be a new branch called climatenet (and I think they may be interested if there is enough interest from you). There is a need for discussion about how to combat climate change; how to reduce our personal carbon footprints and how to deal with effects of climate change as they arise. It could also could be a place to air ideas big or small for sustainable living and clean energy.
As grandparents we owe this to our grandchildren. Please, all of you out there, respond to this plea.

Oops sorry! ( humbly crawls away)

Bags Sat 23-Jun-12 19:19:00

Esoteric is one of my faves too.

Hey, guys (whispering!), some people might get a bit cross at all this frivolity.

Mind you, it does ease the tension.

As you were wink

Bags Sat 23-Jun-12 19:14:08

I did! I noticed!

I say, jeni! I noticed!

I thought it perfectly apt.

Apt. There's a nice word.

I noticed your erudite usage too. wink

jeni Sat 23-Jun-12 19:12:47

I did it much earlier in this thread but nobody noticed my erudition!
That's my word of the day "erudite" and it's deririvatives! I've used it three times so far!
Have to go and think of a word for tomorrow now?
Might use esoteric! Not to be confused with erotic!

'Quis custodet ipsos custodes' to be accurate. [smug emoticon] Why are we suddenly spouting Latin?

jeni Sat 23-Jun-12 18:50:36

Heyariadne that's MY LATIN TAG ( its the only one I know!) hands off!

Ariadne Sat 23-Jun-12 18:45:40

nag Bags grin

Anagram Sat 23-Jun-12 18:44:14

Bags! No need to apologise!

I got all excited then, I thought the wide lines had gone, but it was only another page starting...sad (I have 50 on posts on a page)

Sorry, back to the discussion in hand...

Bags Sat 23-Jun-12 18:42:03

Sorry, nag, just being naughty blush

Ariadne Sat 23-Jun-12 18:40:12

"quis custodiet custodies?"

It is all a matter of education, not coercion, isn't it? But very full on education, and it is not going to happen quickly. Planning too is of the essence; I don't think there is any doubt that overpopulation is at the root of many of the world's problems.

(As are greed, self interest and general selfishness on the part of more economically developed countries.)

Anagram Sat 23-Jun-12 18:39:21

hmm

Bags Sat 23-Jun-12 18:36:55

That's still an aargh! Poor man. He can't help it.

Anagram Sat 23-Jun-12 18:36:02

The Roman Catholic Church's continued refusal to sanction contraception (apart from the woefully risky 'rhythm method') doesn't help, either.

(I think Brown's face, had Labour won, probably would have been more of a 'smug emoticon'!)

jeni Sat 23-Jun-12 18:29:38

grin

Bags Sat 23-Jun-12 18:28:56

AArgh!

jeni Sat 23-Jun-12 18:27:14

What does an optimist emoticon look like? Browns face on being reelected PM?

Bags Sat 23-Jun-12 18:14:31

Have read the article now. All that is being addressed already both by governments and by charities. Also, the better parts of the UN. It takes a few generations to change long traditions and traditional attitudes. Not liking that fact is not going to change it. We just have to keep trying. I have great faith in humanity's ingenuity in solving the problems it finds itself faced with. We always have done in the past; why would that suddenly change.

[optimist emoticon]

jeni Sat 23-Jun-12 18:07:43

Quite!

Bags Sat 23-Jun-12 18:06:58

carbon, jeni didn't accuse you of anything! She was referring to the article you posted a link to.

carboncareful Sat 23-Jun-12 13:51:11

I fear people are starting to get rude again but it rolls off my back in any case.

Jeni The post was in response to two requests: from Anagram and Bags - so please don't start accusing me of sermonising (again)

j04 Its your problem, not mine, if you can't concentrate long enough to read an article.
Who are the ones who don't drive cars, what are you on about?
And population control is an emotive phrase used by people who are in denial about overpopulation. "Population Matters" do not advocate control.

Anagram Sat 23-Jun-12 13:22:43

I think the article makes some good points, but all the 'solutions' they're advocating would cost too much for governments to agree to implement.

Annobel Sat 23-Jun-12 13:18:34

Population control was a matter of debate back in the early 70s. India tried enforced sterilisation at the time of Indira Ghandi - referred to as 'the witch' in 'Midnight's Children'. Might still be going on and, like jingl, I assume it was not aimed at the rich and educated.

jeni Sat 23-Jun-12 13:12:58

Isn't this the 'sermonising' they who must not be named are talking about?confused

j04 Sat 23-Jun-12 13:01:20

Seems to me the people they would aim the 'population control' at, are the ones who don't drive cars!

j04 Sat 23-Jun-12 12:58:42

I couldn't get past that first paragraph!

How on earth.....?!
