Didn't fracking cause some sort of Earth tremor near Blackpool?

I see in the press that the Government are about to give tax breaks to companies for shale gas exploration. I find it very worrying that this type of exploration would in effect be govt supported.
In France this work has at least been put on hold until more is known but in USA, where it has been going on for some time, there have been dreadful reports and film of water coming from a tap being lit and crops dying, and animals and people being made very ill.
It is, I believe, not the gas itself which causes the problem but the chemicals required in the extraction process getting into the water supplies and causing widespread pollution. Many of the chemicals used are said to be cancer causing.

Does anybody here have any knowledge of this practise and the perils or not that it entails. It is difficult to find a balanced argument on the Internet and at the moment I must confess to being firmly in the anti lobby.
