Indeed one of the things about Africa is that it is showing such a variety of creatures.
Hi allie yes it's where NS finds half its stories. Really useful.

Amazing! And even more amazing that we are able to learn so much these days; I am just catching up with the "Africa" series on TV, and watched the one on the Sahara last night. We're able to see places and things that we might never see or know about.

(Incidentally, did you see the female dung beetle slogging away on the sand dunes? But again, I had no idea about her and the Milky Way!)

Thank you for that.

Actually I suppose they are online too....duh!

I hadn't met this site! Thank you Jess - now I can get a fix I haven't had since I gave up getting a New Scientist sub....

Or that there could be a wild albatross, older than I am, and still having babies.
Obviously the albatross does not have a menopause. grin

I think the point of the article is that we do begin to understand. And that's wonderful.

JessM that is incredible. We may know, but we don't even begin to understand.

I'm supposing dung beetles will have those wonderful multi-lens insect eyes that can 'see' (detect light) upwards as well as in other directions. This is why it's so hard to swat a fly wink

Awesome indeed! But, then, we can see the Milky Way, so why shouldn't dung beetles be able to as well?

Research into the natural world never ceases to amaze. Who would have thought that dung beetles could see the Milky Way - or that they use it to steer by. I am in awe.
