gm, he's quite active on Twitter.

Grannyknot Wed 27-Feb-13 16:14:24

Bags we all think. At least I think we all do. smile

gracesmum Wed 27-Feb-13 16:13:06

confused Really pleased about the 10 reasons Bags. Have remembered that I posted the poem after I had seen Polar Bear Watch.
PS I know it's not true, real Polar Bears prefer rhyming pentameter.
BTW Does anybody know what Chris Packham is doing these days? He used to be all over the television.

Bags Wed 27-Feb-13 16:07:15

hooe?

hope

Bags Wed 27-Feb-13 16:06:55

Not at all, kitty. I've enjoyed it and hooe others have too smile

And it is a sweet story.

kittylester Wed 27-Feb-13 16:01:27

Sorry I led the thread astray bags and didn't take it seriously smile

Both sides in the allegorical sense and both sides in the scientific sense too.

Besides, Why should I have to defend the way I think about things? At least I think.

Bags Wed 27-Feb-13 15:50:10

Which bit about my sentence "I like the poem, really" don't people understand? And why shouldn't I be literal as well as enjoying the allegorical story? I think it's good to see 'both sides'.

annodomini Wed 27-Feb-13 15:36:27

It's a fantasy, an allegory, if you like, for a situation in which there could be two sides to a disaster. Don't be so literal, Bags!!

Bags Wed 27-Feb-13 15:32:02

Bollocks, by the way, are Northern Irish steers wink

Bags Wed 27-Feb-13 15:29:47

Bollocks!

Grannyknot Wed 27-Feb-13 15:28:23

Here you go kitty www.demotivation.us/science-1277274.html - or google "Science: Ruining Everything Since 1543" smile

Bags Wed 27-Feb-13 15:09:09

Sorry, kitty, but it doesn't prove anything of the sort!! It's a fairy tale! smile

kittylester Wed 27-Feb-13 15:06:52

I thought the poem was lovely and liked the fact that it proved there are two sides to most stories. Thank you gm, I hadn't seen it before. smile

Female polar bears rear their young without the father. She keeps away from male bears unless she wants to mate, which she won't while she has cubs in tow. The mothers chase the cubs away to fend for themselves when they are about two-and-a-half years old. This (chasing away) behaviour is common in some other carnivore species as well.

So although the poem is sweet from our point fo view, it's decidedly misleading from a reality of polar bears point if view. Just saying. All the misinformation and misconceptions get annoying after a while.

annodomini Wed 27-Feb-13 14:51:35

I like it a lot and decided to copy it - only to find I already had copied it last time you posted it. Thanks for reminding me about it.

Bags Wed 27-Feb-13 14:33:27

I like the poem, gm, really, but I don't like anthropomorphism about polar bears.

gracesmum Wed 27-Feb-13 14:13:45

This thread reminded me of a poem which I think I have posted before (last year maybe? but couldn't find it) as perhaps a reason why we should still worry about (some) Polar bears

On a cold rainy night on a Liverpool quayside
In the years before the Great War
The world was in shock at the loss of Titanic
So proud had they been days before.
Relatives gathered for news of their loved ones,
To read through the list of the dead,
When into the throng came a sad-eyed Polar Bear,
And to the clerk at the counter he said…

Chorus:
Have you got any news of the iceberg?
My family were on it you see,
Have you got any news of the iceberg?
They mean the whole world to me.

My wife and children were coming from Greenland
To be by my side in the zoo.
Belinda's my wife and the eldest's called Bernard, and Billy, well, he's only two.
I know on the ship there were hundreds of people,
And I know the iceberg's not yours,
The Polar Bear's eyes held the start of his teardrops
He covered his face with his paws.

It's been over a year since I last saw my children,
I left home to build my career:
I've worked very hard, I'm a star in the circus,
It's all been for nothing I fear.
There's my face on the poster,
We're in town this week.
My Children were meeting me here.

Everyone watched as he struggled to speak.
By now all the people had gathered beside him,
His grief was one they could share,
The people around him in silence and sadness,
Listened to the sad Polar Bear.
I wanted my children to see me performing,
And Belinda, she would have been proud.
At last, lost for words and his tears flowing freely,
The question was asked by the crowd.

Chorus:
Have you got any news of the iceberg?
My family were on it you see:
Have you got any news of the iceberg?
They mean the whole world to me.
sad

It would be the DM wouldn't it?!! grin

kittylester Wed 27-Feb-13 10:31:11

Surely they can't get the wrappers off Lully grin

Have you seen the picture, in the DM, of one having his nails cut?

LullyDully Wed 27-Feb-13 09:59:34

Great news all being well.

Did a lesson observation once on a young teacher who taught her class that polar bears eat penguins { not even April Fools Day}. She was quite sure she was rigt and googled it defiantly...oops
