New baby at Edinburgh Zoo

But it is not a baby panda. Tian Tian is still keeping everyone guessing about that. This one is a joey, born to the koala.

Lovely! They had a pair of Koalas at London Zoo years ago, but I believe they're really difficult to keep.

They are not the most exciting of animals. They spend most of their time eating eucalyptus and the rest sitting up a tree digesting it. There is not a lot of nutrition in eucalyptus (The 600 to 800 grams of eucalyptus leaves that koalas eat each day provides them with as much energy as one serving of breakfast cereal does for us) and it takes some digesting, hence their reputation for bad temper.

But they are cute, particularly the babies.

I think Koalas and pandas must me on a par for the animals least likely to succeed as a species.
