thatbags Mesmerising! I so want to see a murmuration in real life. Do you know a website that has a geographical list of where to find them?

Of course the list cannot include all sites, doesn't show my local one at Otmoor nature reserve near Oxford.
Yesterday at about 4pm, when I was in my garden, I could hear a sound that could only have been a large collection of starlings, but I could not see anything. Perhaps they were roosting nearby or out of sight beyond the hill.

Info about UK starling roosts from this number or email, icy: For information on the roosting starlings please phone the Avalon Marshes Starling Hotline - 07866 554142. Please do not leave enquiries on this number, as it is an automated service and they cannot be answered.

You can also find out more about the location and receive an automated email, by emailing [email protected]

My dad took us to the one on Beacon Fell in Lancashire's Trough of Bowland, near where we lived, back in the 1960s. Completely fabulous.

We called that fell Duck Dinner Hill because the first time we went we had duck sandwiches. I think the duck meat must have been a present as I don't remember my mum ever buying it and I didn't have another duck sandwich for a very long time.

Thanks thatbags. I found the mathematical explanation fascinating, as well.

We had a flock of around 200 of starlings roosting on our poplar trees last year. I tried to get a video of their murmuration but only succeeded in a pic of them lining up on the electricity cable and beginning their flight. My battery ran out which was frustrating. I will have to practice as it was my DD's old camera and I hadn't used the video before. The weather has been so awful they've probably gone into a deeper wooded area. They could come back though.
