They are forecasting El Niño later this year. El Niño usually means very cold winters for us due to high pressure as we had in November/December 2010. So make sure you remember where those have been stored away.

Then again, they could be wrong hmm

ashtree, hawthorn blossom isn't out in my garden yet.

Purpledaffodil Sat 16-May-15 21:21:54

However I will agree that the scenery and people up there are wonderful. It's just the climate I found tricky and luckily DH has never had the urge to retire up there, 50 years of living south of Watford have softened him!

Purpledaffodil Sat 16-May-15 21:18:09

Had experience of North East summers when DH and I were students and I used to visit his parents up there. It had always been wonderful the week before they assured us as we shivered. My cousin moved to near Durham, got out his garden furniture and BBQ for the first time and promptly put them away again. grin

It is nicer again today, even sat outside in the sunshine in short sleeves and had a cup of tea!

etheltbags1 Sat 16-May-15 21:04:34

In Newcastle today they were still wearing ugg boots and fur coats.

OK It has been just as sunny today (14th) but the wind is back and so is the fleece! Brilliant for drying washing though.
hildajenniJ, ethelbags1 and pinkprincess I have experienced Northumberland and Newcastle too so I take your point! I think warmth may be an East/West rather than North/South divide. I blame the Pennines!

pinkprincess Thu 14-May-15 23:19:03

I am in Newcastle and it is freezing here today, I have even put gloves on when outside as I thought my fingers were getting frostbite.
I have got the heating on for DH's benefit. He has cardiac disease and poor circulation and can't bear being cold, the heating bills are going to be high but needs must.
I am beginning to despair of seeing a summer this year.

etheltbags1 Thu 14-May-15 21:54:12

Im in Northumberland too, hilda we must be hardy souls up here, I live near the coast and the wind is sooo icy even in may so my woollies are still being used and will be all year round.

loopylou Thu 14-May-15 20:47:30

It's such changeable weather I have no idea what to wear confused, 2" rain here today and I've never driven in such monsoon-like conditions in all my life!

pompa Thu 14-May-15 19:19:50

Winter woolies back on, awful weather today, cold, wet.windy.

loopylou Thu 14-May-15 19:14:17

Just fished fleece top out of the back of the wardrobe grin
Flippin' freezing!

NotTooOld Thu 14-May-15 19:10:36

hildajenniJ - I'm not far from Birmingham either. We have had a few hottish days but interspersed with cold ones. Chilly winds are the norm at the moment. I started putting away my winter clothes a while back but then the weather changed so I have left most of them where I can get at them which makes for interesting sartorial combinations. Today I am wearing short trousers with a zipped up navy blue fleece. Not a good look really.

rosequartz Thu 14-May-15 15:03:51

Yesterday was lovely - 24C and sunny and we enjoyed being in the garden with DGD who was wearing a summer dress and sun hat.
Today it is cold and wet and I have just put a wrap around me and will go and find a nice warm jumper.

aggie Thu 14-May-15 14:04:18

Still got my Simmit on under a jumper and a cardi !

hildajenniJ Thu 14-May-15 13:58:54

I'm in Northumberland Grandma2213. I live on the side of a hill, and there is no shelter from the wind in my garden. I took the dog for a walk and was glad I had put my coat on. I know it's been warm further south, my cousin lives in Birmingham and has been gardening in her shorts and tee shirt! We still have quite a few trees without leaves too.

annodomini Thu 14-May-15 13:39:26

When didn't you need layers in this climate?

Charleygirl Thu 14-May-15 13:18:24

I was out in the garden sunbathing yesterday- today it is raining and cold and I am considering switching on the heating for an hour to take the chill off.

rosesarered Thu 14-May-15 13:13:57

Agree Ashtree, I think it's the hawthorn, but back then with no central heating, a woolly could still be needed.First time in a while I have needed a cardie, but it's grey chill and rainy here in Oxfordshire. My wardrobe has still got half and half, can't put all the Winter stuff away yet.

AshTree Thu 14-May-15 07:58:20

"I know May isn't out yet...." The old saying 'cast not a clout till May is out' could be referring to the Hawthorn blossom, rather than the month. I had a friend whose mother strictly adhered to this guidance - I can remember one year it was very warm in May and she was still having to play outside in winter weight skirts and jumpers, sweating profusely and so envious of the rest of us in our summer dresses!

MariClaire Thu 14-May-15 07:40:22

Out here on the "wild west" coast of the US, we need El Niño to break this terrible drought and firestorm danger (again). Then again, we would have mudslides and flooding. confused

Grandma2213 Thu 14-May-15 01:16:28

hildajenniJ How far North are you frozen? I got sunburnt today (13th) in my Lancashire garden even after using sunscreen. It has been sunny all week but to be fair the wind made it colder until today when it actually got too hot to garden. I had a little snooze on the sun lounger which may account for the burn!

ninathenana Thu 14-May-15 00:02:40

I went out in just a skirt and T-shirt for the first time this year today.

Yes, and undies and sandals too.

ninathenana Thu 14-May-15 00:00:01

ß § Å ¤ » œ ¿ I have no idea what these all mean grin

hildajenniJ Wed 13-May-15 18:15:46

Winter woolies are turning out to be all year woolies up here in the frozen north. I haven't shed anything yet. I know May isn't out yet but I had hoped it might be a bit warmer by now. I am determined not to put the heating back on though.

rascal Wed 13-May-15 17:55:37

I'm still wearing mine too!
