Ban the microbeads

Microbeads - small particles of plastic - are in many products that we use daily and are polluting our oceans and consequently getting into our food.

The EU has dragged its heels in banning these products despite the campaigning by many organisations.

For more information on which products to avoid:

The Daily Mail is campaigning to get these beads banned, not in 2020, but as soon as possible. Their article shows some of the products which contain them, but it is not a complete list.
The article contains a lot of information about these pollutants and how they are endangering our environment and potentially our health.

Please be aware that if you wish to dispose of these products you have to consign them to landfill (obviously!), as disposing of them down the sink will only add to the problem.

Ridiculous to put bits of plastic into anything people use on a daily basis. Where do they think they are going to end up if not in the oceans? hmm

I don't this is exclusive to the Daily Mail though. Plenty of scientists and environmentalists are up in arms about it.

Yes, but no-one seems to have had enough clout to get the EU moving so perhaps a bit of shouting may work!
(why?)

I have tried to avoid them but am horrified to find that the toothpaste I like may contain them shock

according to this our government may ban them independently of anyone else

They will need a bit of a push because they may have other things on their mind.

Faqcial scrubs! hmm

What the eff is wrong with a flannel?

Jalima Fri 26-Aug-16 19:48:54

I was offered a free tube of 'facial scrub' the other day when I bought some cosmetics (hope they don't contain microbeads!)
I said No Thanks.
However, I didn't realise they probably contained plastic.

It's surprising how many different things seem to go on at the same time in government. confused Different departments I suppose.

Bump!

I said on a different thread that I didn't know what to do, but it looks like the products I use - not tested on animals - might already be doing something about this.

I am now looking for microbeads in the products I have at home and will chuck them away. I won't knowingly buy any from now on. It's the only contribution I can make yo this problem.

It is difficult to tell.
The sad thing is they will have to go into landfill.

I sometimes think about this conundrum:

'What is the best invention of the last century (and a bit)?'
'What is the worst invention of the last century (and a bit)?'

In both instances I could answer plastic
