Have just seen this in my garden. It has a blue ring and I suspect is an aviary escapee.
It's about the size of a wren with a short tail and as you can see is tan/white. Any ideas what breed it is ?

Was it eating nina? Bit worrying if it is an escapee.

Is it a finch? It is difficult to tell from the photo.

I think it is a finch whitewave. It didn't seem interested in the bird table.
If it is a finch it's not one I've ever seen, I did a Google of aviary birds but couldn't find it.
Bert the cat is going mad from behind the patio doors smile it's still flying around.

I can't see anything like it in my bird book. If it's an escapee, I don't suppose it has much chance of surviving.

It could be a (Lesser )Whitethroat. They migrate here for the summer ( ha, ha!) but start arriving in April.
They can be seen in most areas of England and Wales, but not Scotland.
Young ones are rather Wren like, but with the white undercarriage.

RSPB are saying to expect migrants to begin to arrive in good numbers from this weekend as the winds are with them. Selbourne the satellite tracked cuckoo was in Southern Spain yesterday.
Swallows, swifts etc all due to begin to arrive
Summer is coming!!

Right colouring for a whitethroat but the beak looks a bit finchy. Was it a stocky beak or a thin beak?

BlueBelle Wed 04-Apr-18 18:50:35

Well if it’s got a ring on it’s not a wild bird

whitewave Wed 04-Apr-18 18:54:52

Oh it could be wild birds are ringed.

The British Trust for Ornathology ring wild birds so they can record numbers and track migration.
Nina if you can enlarge your photo and see part of the number you can report the sighting.
Maybe sending them the photo would help their research.
