Morocco to supply wind and solar power to the UK

By 2030 8% of UK electricity will be supplied by underwater cables.
An interesting development.

annodomini Sat 02-Oct-21 10:58:38

Three of Britain’s biggest energy companies have agreed to build giant underwater power cables to bring Scotland’s vast reserves of renewable energy to millions of homes in England.
(Guardian, Nov 2020)

Why bring energy supplies all the way from Morocco when we have it in the UK ready and waiting?

I believe you LauraNorder, sorry if I jumped to conclusions.

However there are some things that "great scientists" will never agree to and that doesn't mean that their minds are closed. I have been accused of having a "closed mind" because I don't believe in the supernatural, and many other things. Anyway, I've diverted the thread, back to solar power.

8% isn’t very much. Why aren’t we harvesting the Severn Bore? What happened to the Swansea Bay project and will the proposed Bridgwater Bay go ahead?

LauraNorder Sat 02-Oct-21 09:54:49

Alegrias, please believe me, I didn’t mean it to be a personal dig.
Just a general comment that I believe and have repeated many times.

Any energy that comes from sun and wind is brilliant I. My book.
I lived for 20 years off grid with all our power coming from these 2 sources.

Have you had to update any of
your appliances MerylStreep?

LauraNorder

I would think that totally great scientists never close their minds to anything.

Nice dig ???

Renewable energy sources are of course safer but we’ll never produce enough from solar, wind and tidal to feed our present day needs.

Agreed, although the tech has come a long way from its inception.
So every little helps.

Oh aye? Your faith is touching. Don't hold your breath.

As Scotty would have said, ^ye canna change the laws of physics.^

As a scientist you must be aware that the latest in q physics has done exactly that.

Oh dear - parting shot.

The laws of physics don't change. We understand them better.

This country really needs to up it's STEM education.

I'm not having the debate again, its just makes me angry smile

Yes LauraNorder that's very true.
We have to be vigilant not to make decisions on opinions that are out of date.

I see Rolls Royce are working with the Gov. to install mini-nuclear reactors around the British Isles. This is a futuristic project to supply all energy needs. I don't know whether to approve of this, or not.

Yes your right Boz.
They are developing the same tech to go to the moon and Mars.

LauraNorder Sat 02-Oct-21 09:32:08

With a world full of amazing scientists there will come a time when we will be capable of harnessing nuclear waste and using it to our advantage.
Clean and cheap we shouldn’t give up on it yet.

IMO, not.

Although I'm sure someone will be along shortly to tell you that its all fine, they're much safer than they used to be and the fact that the waste is radioactive for 40,000 years just isn't any problem at all.

That was the problem. The powers that be realised the plebs were getting something out of it. Can’t have that ?

Mind you, weren’t some well off folk (or companies) renting roof space from less affluent home owners, letting them have some of the energy generated & making fat profits for themselves? I remember reading about it a few years back and the law got tightened up.

It's just shameful, really, that we can't supply our own power. We have plenty of weather here - wind, wave and solar etc. but, it seems, not enough forward planning and long term investment to make good use of our resources.

Why don’t people read and research instead of just saying we don’t do this or we don’t do that.

That’s interesting Meryl ? have never understood why poor but sunny countries do not stick panels on every roof.

I remember when solar panels first came out and there were really good incentives. You got the benefit of the electricity coming into your home plus a nice payback for the excess electricity that went back on the grid. New installations don't get the payback any more.

It baffles me honestly that such a productive, space saving scheme has lost so much incentive.

Profit over common sense and saving the planet
