.....the Restore Nature Now march in London, on behalf of Extinction Rebellion. I assume that she, of course, walked to the march wherever she happens to live.
Sure, just as Grumpy Greta Thunberg probably (ha!) walks everywhere to save the planet?

Emma Thompsons activism has always made me wince. I have never forgotten the interview with her where she explained how she needed to fly for work but that people needed to stop flying to hen parties.

Flying in general makes me wince as I live under a Heathrow flightpath. Personally I don't think that anybody should make unnecessary flights. Sometimes we can actually see the planes dumping surplus fuel from their wings prior to landing - though we are of course told that this never happens.

Please define "unnecessary". I make one return plane journey a year to visit my son and family in Canada. There is no practical alternative. I deem my journey necessary, but I'm guessing plenty would say it's not.
Emma Thompson does not need to fly between Italy and the UK that journey can easily be done by train.
It's the hypocrisy of telling others what they should do that puts people off.

To other posters, calling out hypocrisy does not mean the critics don't think anything should be done, but let's not pretend all the protestors are doing everything they advocate for others.

What a lot of snide comments about Emma Thompson. I agree with the aims of the march and respect Emma Thompson for being at the front of it.

Emma Thompson a champagne socialist.

I'm missing your point?

Wyllow3 Tue 25-Jun-24 13:35:56

Yesterday the repeat of horrific wildfires which have started up again was on the news.

Correct, nicenanny, it's part of international concerns. Thats not an argument for not starting at home, though.

It would help if they would stop allowing developers to make millions to build houses no-one can afford on green land instead of providing affordable/social housing on brownfield land.

I live in a very rural area & I’ve noticed there’s no longer a dawn chorus…. surely something has gone terribly wrong? I’ve also noticed a shortage of insects, particularly honey bees 🐝 I don’t mind who leads a protest in support of Restore Nature Now, as long as it happens.

China pumps out more pollution in eight years than UK since Industrial Revolution
CO2 emissions of 80bn tonnes from 2013 to 2020 is higher than Britain’s 78bn over 220 years

This is as silly and pointless as those comments like "When China stops burning fossil fuels, I will". We all have to do something NOW, regardless of what others are doing or not doing. Or perhaps you're happy to see our planet and all its species - including humans - facing extinction?

Well said Outcast52 👏

Thank you.

People seem more concerned with nit picking than protecting our climate. It seems to have been forgotten.

The Reform Party even go as far as being Climate Change deniers

Honestly, we get a proper, quiet, well organised march organised by well respected figures like Packham for nature and with climate concerns and people will find something to grumble about!

Yes. The links with Extinction Rebellion.
Chris Packham is a prominent figure, but not necessarily a well-respected one.

Just to be clear, my comment above was in response to Babamaman:

Yes, all walked to London in their plastic shoes! None of them used their lithium battery mobile phones? None bought imported foods in prepacking ie: sandwiches
All have solar panelled houses!

Don’t forget her home in Scotland, on the shores of beautiful Loch Eck.

She is an outstanding actor.

I don't disagree on that but I wholly support the March and its aims, it sounds really positive and worth supporting, but why such a negative introduction?

She turns up everywhere and just needs to be the centre of attention and in the starring role. I immediately lose interest when she is on the screen.

What is the matter with you all? She turns up to support a good cause, when she could sit at home comfortably. She is a Celebrity and being ‘centre stage’ will garner extra publicity for the march.
Great, and well done her.

She and her husband are Italian Citizens, residents of Venice.

She flits between Venice and London, many flights but preaching about being green?

My daughter was there - she is a marine conservationist. She said that the atmosphere was wonderful. I hope that they make a difference somehow.

Me too Galaxy When she was questioned (when in the pink boat protest) about her huge carbon footprint by flying first class rather than economy her reply was she was 'too old' to fly economy and anyway she offset her carbon emissions. That there would be loads of people older than her, some with disabilities etc all packed into economy doesn't register in her brain. Perhaps just being plebs they don't count.
