I was just thinking, many years ago I used to go and stay with a friend in the countryside and, if the light was on on a warm evening and door or window open, the room would be filled with crane flies rattling around. I haven't seen one for years, likewise moths used to invade my bedroom when I was a child. Both of them terrified me, fluttering and crashing around (irrational I know). I used to yell for my Dad and he'd cup his hands around them and put them out.

I was there with DD1. We travelled to the march by Tube. A huge crowd, very cheerful. One of the speakers was an Amazonian Indian woman in traditional dress, who addressed us in Spanish (she had an interpreter). Chris Packham made a point of thanking the police, among other people, for helping to make the march a success. I honestly don't remember seeing either Emma Thompson or Judi Dench - we must have arrived too late. The organisations represented included the RSPB, not known as firebrands. Some of the hats were amazing - a straw one with a crochet bird's nest. There was a man who seemed to be tetraplegic, who was in an electric wheelchair and who had a mobile attached to it with knitted birds and bees dangling from it. All very civilised. Tourists wandering past us looked bewildered, some took photos.

I should have caught on from the O/P it wasn't going to be about the March - would have been interested to see what different sorts of people went on it and so on.

Honestly, we get a proper, quiet, well organised march organised by well respected figures like Packham for nature and with climate concerns and people will find something to grumble about!

It's seems a real pity that instead of addressing the issues that Restore Nature Now's entirely peaceful March people are just piling in on one of the participants.

People joined it from all over the country (its in local newspapers)

We're not piling in with well-meaning folk who are concerned about the environment and I am too.

We are fed up with hypocritical 'do as I say and not as I do'

I actually agree with the critiques on Emma Thompson after a couple of well made points, (like I didn't know she flew first class and so on)

but I remain sad so little said about the march and climate change. At the end of the day she was after all just one participant but it has dominated 3 pages.

If they start telling me I shouldn't fly or do other things they do then yes I'll call them hypocrites too. How about you, do you think it's OK for Emma Thompson to make exceptions for herself while preaching to everyone else? Is she really 'too old' to fly economy? She's just turned 65 and has flown first class for years.

Wyllow3 criticising the hypocrisy of those whose outlook is "do as I say not as I do" does not mean that people aren't supporting or addressing the problems. I do though wonder how these people from all over the country managed to get to the march without involving the use of fossil fuels.
I think that some of Just Stop Oil stunts have the opposite effect to their stated aim and actually turn people off, likewise the hypocritical preaching of the Emma Thompson types. Do you think she can really 'offset' her 4 times carbon footprint by planting a tree or two? Wouldn't it show genuine commitment if she'd said 'Gosh four times the carbon footprint, yes that's quite awful, I shall in future fly and campaign for economy class only on planes, we're all in this together' But she's not prepared to give up her comfort for the planet, only other people's.

I think Greta Thunberg made a salient point at Davos a couple of years ago apropos of the umpteen private jets lined up on the runway there. Something along the lines of "the very people who preach about saving the planet are the ones destroying it" not verbatim but that was the sentiment underpinning her argument. Lead by example.

I don't believe planting a tree mitigates the damage either.

So what - there will always be the rich and the poor…but it’s good to see the rich DOING something!!

Emma Thompson makes many flights every year always in first class. It was pointed out to her that her carbon footprint in first class is 4 times that of someone in economy class, so would she be prepared to switch to economy. She replied that she was 'too old' to fly economy and anyway she pays to offset her footprint. Not exactly leading by example is she? Or maybe she just doesn't fancy mixing with the plebs unless it's for a cause.

Didn't she fight against having a supermarket opened in her area, over two miles from her home?
Not everyone can afford artisan food shops.
