Good news, no one hurt in the family, one relative has no light or electricity, and one had water coming into the house.
My partners brother lives in the house my partners owns and one of the best things he done was put a very strong roof on the house, it cost a fortune but was so worth it.
Now the big clear up they have upturned tree's that they lost, beutiful mango, advocate, breadfruit and others, one my partner planted as a child.
He has been on the phone quite alot now but had to wait because of the time difference.

Thank goodness for the strong roof. My thoughts are with those who are having to rebuild their lives - I assume it’s not possible to insure against storm damage?

So, why do so many people go on holiday in the hurricane season?.

Because it’s the cheapest time of the year to go to the Caribbean.

Unless the foreign office had issued a do not fly/visit statement if the tourists hadn’t flown their insurance would have not paid their out of pocket expenses, which would have been the entire cost of their holiday.

I did mention upthread why airlines/holiday companies were still flying in tourists when the hurricane had been confirmed as hitting Jamaica and other islands.

Money is your answer, usually is for most things 🤷‍♀️

Tourists all need to go home now as the airport is opening imminently, there is going to be scarce resources & I hope everyone who isn't based there leaves as soon as feasible.

The food production area in Jamaica has been devastated by the hurricane.

That's a relief, rafichagran, that no-one was hurt. The recovery will take a lot of effort and time.

More lives have been lost in Haiti, now Melissa is hitting Cuba, heading for The Bahamas and growing in size.

Presumably there will be an appeal by the Red Cross and other charities.

Why on earth were airlines still flying in tourists to Jamaica when this hurricane has been forecast for at least the last five days?

Making sure they lost as little money as possible?

The most important thing is nobody is hurt. And thank goodess for the strong roof!

I hope they will be able to plant some new trees once they have cleared up and started to get back to normal.

When you see some of the makeshift homes in the Caribbean, they don't look as though they'd withstand a gusty wind, let alone something of this magnitude.

I don't know that the infrastructure of some of these Caribbean islands can provide any substantive support for people who will inevitably lose their homes and belongings.
It must be very frightening.

Yes, I saw some photos of homes today and they didn't look as though they could withstand a stiff breeze, let alone a hurricane. It must be terrifying.

I don’t think the full picture will be known for days, I just read 75% of power and phones are down. I hope Cuba and other countries in the path of Melissa don’t get it so bad.

Hope everyone is OK. Last I heard it had been downgraded to a tropical storm. We were in Antigua for Hurricane George. Most frightening experience of my life.

Thankyou Vera. My partner is keeping in touch with close family by text. One has phoned to say they ok, they have boarded the windows because the wind and rain is strong. I love Jamaica as well.

We've only been to Jamaica for a day, on a cruise, but would love to go back.

On the news, a whole family was over there for a celebration. So frightening for them and not what they were expecting.
Let’s hope the storm passes without too much damage and no loss of life.

We were in a Hotel in Florida Keys when Hurricane Katrina hit the area. It wasn't in the "eye" just off but the whole area was completely trashed, it was an experience, Palm trees in the swimming pools was a sight, we never imagined, no electricity etcI wouldn't want to do again. That one went onto New Orleans and destroyed most of the area with loss of life.
Thoughts with everyone in the area, as it's moving up into Cuba and the Bahamas.

The East of the island has no been hit as badly, as far as I know.

It does look very frightening.

How frightening. How on earth do people survive this . Surely no property can remain standing. Poor souls

Meanwhile - there's people speculating that "That's the whole idea - left flattened like Hawaii - all ready for a 'smart city' ".

The jury is out on that one - but there's one heck of a lot of weather manipulation going on the last few years.

Fingers crossed for them indeed all round - as I've seen some of the clips and it looks bad...

At the moment they are OK, although he cannot contact one relative, and one reports water in the house. They are not in the worst hit areas.
