It's a very personal thing, isn't it?
I have a friend whose youngest daughter texts her first thing every morning without fail, and they exchange a few texts throughout the day - every day.
Another friend, aged 40, speaks to her mum and dad every evening on the phone, and most evenings to her brother too.
I would find that way over the top, but I am very close to all 3 of my daughters. We don't feel the need to be in communication all the time, and are very laissez faire about things in general. We each know that the others would 'be there' at the drop of a hat if needed, but we meet up, mum and daughter, or sister and sister, when it fits in with life in general. It's interesting to hear how different family dynamics work.

I read the blog by Janet and thought it was fabulous so similar to my family the only differance being that my youngest DS always wants to know where I am if he rings and my DH answers the phone when I am not at home, but is that because he is "the baby" ?

That was lovely to read - it's very like our family - we come and go as we like and keep each other in the loop. The nicest thing I like about my kids (and YES I'm using that word) is that they don't switchboard through me now, but do things together without me having to be involved.
