Sorry GNHQ I don't like the Oldie Borum

Okay - a little bit contentious perhaps, but I don't actually like Gransnet being linked with a publication. Although the things I share on Gransnet are public and I have no illusions about what that means, I think that the link with the Oldie Magazine substantially changes the forum and I feel very uncomfortable about having my posts under the press microscope. In short, I just don't trust the press.

So, from now on I won't be posting much in the way of personal stuff and I do feel let down that GNHQ took this decision without soliciting the views of existing posters.

They have just (last month) put the whole mag onto the net to be accessed by subscribers. i suspect they want to boost numbers and Gransnet was a logical link.

GERALDINE - have you got any comments on this?!

I gotta go shopping!

Elegran Thu 15-Mar-12 11:33:49

If so wotsit I hope that Geraldine kicked her butt suitably.

wotsamashedupjingl Thu 15-Mar-12 11:31:58

Elegran I think Charlie omitted to tell Geri! hmm grin

I think G came on here a bit red faced and flustered! smile

Oxon70 They can see everything on Gransnet - as can anyone who cares to look - but need to log into Gransnet as well as the OmBm to post.

So they will see our response if they look at the appropriate thread. I don't think there is anyone posting yet who was not on Gransnet already. it is very new.

Geraldine has apologised for the way it was/was not introduced.

But we'd like another one.

More abject.

I should add that if I come across anything useful, I will pm those other Gransnetters who I know look to the 'Denied Contact' thread for support.

Elegran Thu 15-Mar-12 11:27:38

That was a reply to Wotsits post. everyone is posting too fast to keep up with!

Oxon70 Thu 15-Mar-12 11:26:26

Thanks Elegran, for letting us know what can be seen. I wondered how you got in from the other end. But they need to log in again to get here?
Are they getting to see our response then?

Questions for GN:
If we start a thread there will they censor delete it if they don't like it?
Are they allowed to put in advertising on those threads? Which I already see once, and has been commented on...can we report it?
Are they allowed to advertise on other threads?
Has this all been worked out at all?

I want to make it clear that I don't like this either.
Feels like the time that the landlord of my friends' shared house introduced a new tenant, without any consultation. A lot of resentment.
Which shouldn't have been expressed to the tenant, but was.....

Come on, landlord, where are you?

Elegran Thu 15-Mar-12 11:26:10

I think they were getting round to it when they were overtaken by the sudden posting of those threads. Perhaps whoever did that was not aware of how fast they would appear on Gransnet as well of the OmBm ? Perhaps it was even a trial run that got posted by mistake? We've all done it - clicked on publish instead of preview.

Will a vote bring us to a happy conclusion jeni? If we try to exert the same pressure as has been brought to bear by introducing this unwanted aspect of Gransnet, we are getting into conflict that we might be able to avoid. My decision is to avoid the Borum threads, and until I am confident that there is contribution and not just interrogating questions being fired at us by people who we don't know anything about, I will be holding back from sharing anything that might be exploited.

Sadly, it feels like constructive threads like 'Denied Contact' will die the death as a result of this. How very sorry I am about that.

Mamie Thu 15-Mar-12 11:24:37

I think the thing that annoys me (apart from the way the OB was introduces without consulation) is the fact that the threads seem to have appeared without any serious evaluation of what was on here already and the age and profile of the people who post.
What I like about Gransnet is that posts and replies are generally much more considered than on other forums and people think before they write. It is the casual thoughtlessness that makes me cross.

wotsamashedupjingl Thu 15-Mar-12 11:22:37

No. I don't think they even put anything on there. Which was downright daft a bit unthinking. hmm

wotsamashedupjingl Thu 15-Mar-12 11:20:42

I can understand that em. smile

I suppose we all did check the homepage when we say we were not forewarned? (I rarely go there!)

wotsamashedupjingl Thu 15-Mar-12 11:19:07

Why don't we just let it lie and see how it goes? smile

It all adds a bit of interest.

Thanks J - I think I've changed the status from 'very difficult' to 'difficult but manageable'!! Can't really explain why, but was seriously put out when I got back to find all this! It's pretty obvious that virtually no-one is welcoming GNHQ's latest initiative with open arms but I admire those of you who are willing to be more tolerant of it than I feel! I think it's the sense of imposition without consultation that irritates me - and yes I know I can ignore the whole damn thing - but I am still disgruntled.

Carol Thu 15-Mar-12 11:13:52

I don't get the impression that any of us don't welcome new members, and we all do tend to go off at a tangent with our discussions, which shows we happily evolve and are open to new ideas, but this isn't what we are experiencing here, is it?

It feels like a commercial project being planted onto a friendly forum, not for reasons of giving, but to extract.

jeni Thu 15-Mar-12 11:13:00

Perhaps we ought to have a vote on this?

Elegran Thu 15-Mar-12 11:12:09

I have just gone to The Oldie online and logged in there (If you have a subscriber number from buying the mag it is your password) and looked at the Oldie Borum.

It opens at the topic name Oldie Borum, with all the threads under that topic name. The whole page is in fact the Gransnet page, with all the same stuff at the top - Active, I'm On and so on - and I reached this thread from there. I then logged in to post exactly as on Gransnet, with Gransnet username and password.

So what greets you on entering the Oldie Borum is their own topics, but otherwise it is just a link to Gransnet.

wotsamashedupjingl Thu 15-Mar-12 11:11:11

Should have added a wink next to that angry !

wotsamashedupjingl Thu 15-Mar-12 11:10:31

em! Don't you go going anywhere!!! angry

(hope things are looking up for you and yours) sunshine

em Thu 15-Mar-12 11:05:12

Thanks A. The more of us who make it clear that we find this imposition unacceptable the sooner they might realise that they got it wrong - both the concept and they way it was (or rather wasn't) introduced.

Annobel Thu 15-Mar-12 11:02:02

Don't abandon us, please, em. You are not alone by any means in finding this innovation unacceptable.

em Thu 15-Mar-12 10:59:13

First time in a week or so that I've managed to log on here and am pretty taken aback to find this. I read the WW2 memories thread - surely that shows how totally out of touch 'they' are with the majority of us. After a difficult few days I was looking forward to catching up but am very disappointed to find this has been imposed with absolutely no prior consultation with existing members. I think it implies an air of complacency in GNHQ - as if they feel they can simply make a significant change without the courtesy of suggesting and discussing first. Will go off and 'reconsider my position!'

Bez Thu 15-Mar-12 10:48:28

I found all the first lot of posts very strange and felt it was some sort of infiltration and did post and ask why they were asking all the questions and giving none of their own ideas/feelings.

I agree about being uncomfortable with the extra link we can do nothing about - why can it not be a button at the top which will go straight to the Oldie forum if anyone wishes to contribute there - they have that link here it seems and then anyone posting on the borum would be aware of it.

I used to belong to the original GH forum - that got a bit nasty with some of the postings and many people left and then the forum was drasticlly changed but I have never belonged to the new version. I would hate to see anything like that happen here as this is a nice friendly place. confused
