Dumbing down of Gransnet?

On the front page of Gransnet, for Shakespeare Week (on at the moment of course) there is a selection of "gransnetters' top quotes". All of them "funny". Which is fine as far as it goes, but come on!!! Shakespeare is about a lot more than that! Why not some quotes with a bit more profundity? A bit more beauty???

Is this supposed to reflect the depth of Gransnetters' thinking? hmm

Lovely!

I thought a sonnet was 14 lines, or have I got confuddled again?

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 20-Mar-14 11:07:31

I thought it was yours A! So glad I did n't judge it to be rubbish! grin

Ariadne! Thought you had composed it yourself.

Ariadne Thu 20-Mar-14 11:00:56

Thank you, jings! It's a Shakesperian sonnet so thought it appropriate.

Are we making them up now, then?here is a worthy bit of verse[ though not mine]
I eat my peas with honey,
I've done it all my life,
it makes the peas taste funny,
but it keeps them on the knife!

I feel September coming, subtle, slow;
The promise of the springtime now is mine.
I wonder, though, if ever autumn's glow
Equals the clear brightness of springtime?
I think not. But the difference is all;
Both gold and green are beautiful to see,
And all the golden leaves that softly fall,
In dying, will bring life back to the tree.
Fall gently then, and let the springtime go.
Let old leaves fall and let the new ones grow.

eglantine
Sweet Rose that thou art
Withdraw thine cruel thorns
Espouse the art, of
Sweet enduring rhyme,,
For on thine cruel darts
Thou, wounds this heart of mine!
Thou knowst my limping gait
Encompasses a heart so great
That it would, in its pain
Encompass thy heart
Once again!

Just checked them out. They're brilliant. I can't even think of a quote let alone put a picture with it....

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 19-Mar-14 21:02:22

Yes. I appreciate they are witty. But all a bit "samey". A bit of variety would be good. After all there is quite a lot to choose from. grin

annodomini Wed 19-Mar-14 20:41:35

I've just checked out the quotations in question and they are not so much 'funny' in the sense of comical, as witty which is what I expect in Shakespeare's work. The exception is the one I submitted which is from Lear and definitely not funny, though the simile is an apt one, if misplaced in this instance.
