Did the big competition achieve many/any new members? Was that the intention?

janerowena Sun 12-Oct-14 14:15:31

I didn't know it existed! I found here before I found mumsnet, I used to belong to ivillage instead. I googled empty nesting during my DS's last year at school, and here they were. The grandkids were purely incidental. grin

We have a 'Gransnet' bit too grin
Rather underused these days though.

We've got a shed,*jings*!!

That's rather nice, Many years ago there was a very lonely Dad at playgroup. None of the Mums would speak to him in case the other Mums thought they were trying to chat him up. As a Newbie, that had never entered my head, so I was instantly labelled, but I can't forget how grateful he was for a bit of human contact! He took a year off because his wife was in her final year of studying to be a doctor and they had a shock when she had a pill malfunction, probably due to a winter sickness bug. They were a nice couple, she spent all her time apologising for not being the one at playgroup! Baby Ben, as my DD used to call his DS.

They've got a "Dadsnet" forum at the Other Place.

kittylester Fri 10-Oct-14 07:05:33

Agus, I agree but would think most of the entrants were compers!

baubles Fri 10-Oct-14 06:59:46

Mumsnet says it is 'for parents, by parents'. Any type of parent, that means most of us too.

pompa Fri 10-Oct-14 06:22:17

Good to hear that Dads are welcome on MN, in this era of equality there are many Dads that are the primary child carers.

Ana Thu 09-Oct-14 21:32:25

Yes, of course some of them are - used to be known as 'Compers' grin

Agus Thu 09-Oct-14 21:27:02

Yes, MN does have some Dads who post although one MNer recently queried why Dads should post on Mumsnet!! Her post wasn't well received smile

I think possibly some of the competition entrants could well be 'professional' players as opposed to just preferring to lurk! grin

Galen Thu 09-Oct-14 21:09:51

How could we forget you? My favourite granddad!

pompa Thu 09-Oct-14 21:07:28

Don't forget we have some Granddads on here, we are a sensitive lot !. I don't think MN has Dads, or am I wrong?

Ana Thu 09-Oct-14 20:51:12

Might liven things up a bit! grin

baubles Thu 09-Oct-14 20:40:43

Even though they're leaving you 25 threads to read?

Come on over, it will be fun grin

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 09-Oct-14 20:22:41

Bring it on. We're ready for 'em.

TinyPawzMNRefugee Thu 09-Oct-14 20:12:53

New member here. MN is doing something technical on Saturday so I imagine there will a huge influx of new members this week. We promise not to be too rowdy.

LucyGransnet (GNHQ) Tue 07-Oct-14 16:45:33

Hello! Little bit of info - the number of new joiners has been pretty constant over the three years of Gransnet and, we hope, will continue to be so.

Competitions always tempt people who prefer reading to posting to put pen to paper finger to keyboard. We know lots of members like to stay in the background and that's fine - there's no obligation to post and some people just prefer it that way. That said, we are always delighted when people decide posting is much more fun grin

Ana Tue 07-Oct-14 16:35:51

I know it was on the Competitions forum, but the clue was really in the thread title - The Ultimate Gransnet Prize Draw!

Marmight Tue 07-Oct-14 16:32:14

there not their blush

janeainsworth Tue 07-Oct-14 13:08:20

Yes, I thought it was a competition rather than a draw, marmight.
Wouldn't have bothered carefully composing my little sentence if I'd realised!

Marmight Tue 07-Oct-14 13:03:56

Yes the winner has been on the original thread for the competition - Tanyavt . I too got a little fed up with it and as their was a general draw for the prize, all the comments were slightly unnecessary!! I thought it was for the best comment (finger down the throat emoticon) grin

Crow Tue 07-Oct-14 12:47:09

I didn't know a winner had been selected. I haven't been on very much as life is horrible just now with DS1 going through the most horrendous divorce.
I didn't enter that competition but I did read some of the comments!!!

glammanana Tue 07-Oct-14 12:16:18

I haven't noticed any interaction from the winner .....hmmbut I stand corrected if there has.

Ana Tue 07-Oct-14 11:57:47

A lot of those 'new' members won't stay - they enter competitions and move on to the next one...

janerowena Tue 07-Oct-14 11:44:32

I thought there may be a few?

But oh my goodness. It's lovely to read the occasional declaration of love for grandchildren - but not to have it in your face (if you use the Last Hour link) every day for a month! I wanted it renamed the 'Sickly Sweet Thread'. I was feeling quite nauseous by the end.
