Help us choose a winner - The Churchill Awards

The awards scheme - run by leading retirement developer, Churchill Retirement Living - is designed to honour the work of the UK’s over 65s and celebrates the significant role older people have to play in British society. The awards recognise specific achievements made by individuals in the last 12 months and winners are decided upon by a panel of expert judges.

I've been invited to join the judging panel to champion the ‘Politics’ category and would love gransnetters' nominations to recognise people active in the political arena aged over 65 who have made a significant contribution in the last 12 months to their field.

Please add your nominations to the thread by 31st October 2014.

I'll be presenting them to the judging panel in Novmber - and the winners will be announced later in the year.

Spencer McCarthy, chairman and group managing director of Churchill Retirement Living, comments: “There are 10 million people in the UK that are over 65 years old. The older generation remain vital to the health of our society, they have substantial spending power, and they represent a significant proportion of the popular vote and will continue to increase as a percentage of the overall population. Yet our research has shown that as a society we tend to view older people as simply old - not as ex-war heroes, ex-Olympic athletes, previous captains of industry or lifelong teachers and nurses.

“Increasingly the over 65s play an important role in all realms of society – in politics, art, scientific research older people are still at the forefront of excellence in their field. As a group the older generation has an awful lot to still contribute to society and we wanted to honour and recognise that contribution.”

I do think GNHQ should have got back to us as to whether posthumous nominations are acceptable, although it's rather late in the day now...

I'm still going with Ann Clwyd, despite not being either a Labour supporter or Welsh!

durhamjen Thu 30-Oct-14 13:10:19

Cari did, on Monday. Posthumous nominations are allowed.

Ana Thu 30-Oct-14 13:11:04

Oh, I'm sorry - missed that! blush

Eloethan Thu 30-Oct-14 16:43:57

You do make a very good point jingle and I have reconsidered my suggestions and would also nominate Efua Dorkenu as someone who I should imagine would be universally respected for the contribution she made to protecting the rights of girls and young women.

I do, though, take issue with your very strident initial comments and your final instruction to gransnetters re who they should vote for.

I appreciate you feel strongly about fgm (as I'm sure most of us do) but suggesting that some gransnetters whose views you don't share are "narrow" and "selfish" is, I think, uncalled for. The award does, after all, ask for nominations of people who have made a political contribution and what immediately springs to mind is the more conventional use of the word "political".

Elegran Thu 30-Oct-14 17:07:22

A political contribution surely includes influencing politicians on issues like this.

Eloethan Thu 30-Oct-14 17:30:14

Yes I agree Elegran, almost anything can be described as "political" but my immediate reaction was to think of someone who was "political" in the way the word is generally used.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 30-Oct-14 17:37:52

Not strident and no "instructing" in my post Eloethan. Just trying hard to make my point as effectively as possible.

I hadn't realised that Margaret Hodge is 70. She doesn't look it.
If Tony Benn is not considered acceptable, although I still think he should be, and he will not get the chance next year, Margaret Hodge would be a good replacement.
She certainly does a great deal to hold errant MPs, etc., to account.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 30-Oct-14 17:43:24

What has she actually done in the last twelve months to benefit the human race?

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 30-Oct-14 17:44:57

Can we bear in mind that the first successful prosecution for fgm in this country was brought about in the last few months?

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 30-Oct-14 17:51:05

Where are the posters who contributed to this thread a while ago. Only Glass willing to put her head above the parapet and agree with MiceElf's excellent nomination here?

Ana Thu 30-Oct-14 17:55:27

Ann Clwyd's Female Genital Mutilation Bill (2003)
strengthened measures in the Prohibition of Female Circumcision Act 1985, and increased penalties from five to 14 years.

That was some time ago now, admittedly, but she's still out there working for her constituents, athough she's standing down at the next election.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 30-Oct-14 18:24:17

What is "politics"? Answer: law-making. So it follows that anyone trying to get a law changed, or enforced, is engaging in politics.

Eloethan Thu 30-Oct-14 18:56:51

Chambers says:

"pertaining to policy or government;
pertaining to parties differing in their views of government;
interested or involved in politics"

jingle MiceElf didn't harangue everyone who put forward a nomination different from hers or with which she disagreed. Why are you being so combative?

durhamjen Thu 30-Oct-14 19:04:40

Have a look at the public accounts committee, jingle, if you want to know what Margaret Hodge does in politics.
Or maybe she should be left until after she becomes Mayor of London.

Grannylin Thu 30-Oct-14 19:51:18

I, too, would like to support the nomination for Efua Dorkenoo.Who else could claim that their legacy has the potential to help 30 million girls and women?

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 30-Oct-14 20:04:10

Eleothan - it's politics darling, but not as we know it. grin

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 30-Oct-14 20:05:15

Why do you -effing-- think I'm being so "combative"? grin

You're funny.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 30-Oct-14 20:05:50

I quite agree Grannylin.

Ana Thu 30-Oct-14 20:32:28

Looks like a done deal then - haranguing obviously works!

Grannylin Thu 30-Oct-14 21:14:59

I think I am bright enough to work it out myself Ana

Ana Thu 30-Oct-14 21:33:43

Was there really any need for that, Grannylin? hmm

durhamjen Thu 30-Oct-14 22:51:24

Are you back from holiday now, jingle?

annodomini Thu 30-Oct-14 23:01:24

Thanks for the reminder, jingl. I also endorse the nomination of Efua Dorkenoo.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 31-Oct-14 09:18:35

I make that eight posters nominating Efua Dorkenoo.

Others can count their own.
