Change name problem

(57 Posts)

I am trying to change my username.

I am either doing it wrong, or there is a problem.
I cannot wipe out this name and put a new name in the username box.

or shall I just email gransnet HQ?

They don't do that on here, aggie, your old posts stay under the old username.

But unless you have a very good reason, they are very reluctant to let you change your name so it looks as though the best option is to leave and rejoin, as you say.

If your neighbour looked at Gransnet, which anyone can do without being a member, he would find your post about him written by soontobe. It doesn't go away just because you change your name.

Any forum I have been on , when you change your name , it does it retrospectively so all your old posts are under your new name , so no point in changing if the content of your posts are what discloses your identity . Logging out/getting Mods to kick you out , and rejoining solves this wink

Now confused, doesn't seem to take much to scramble my brain.....

soontobe Sat 24-Jan-15 19:04:11

I will try and start from this point.

Beginning with not posting anything else on this thread!
zips mouth forever!

soontobe Sat 24-Jan-15 19:01:02

Very much so yes.
But if anyone I know wanted to look me up, they would only see part of what I have written.

So if say I was to write that my neighbour annoyed half the village with his big bright lights[which he did], if say he were to wander on here, or if say a different neighbour wandered on here, if I were to name change, only half of what I had written would be seeable. Theperson who wandered in would not see the other half of what I write.

The neighbour in question does not realise that he annoyed so many people.

See! I am a blabber mouth.

I sort of see gransnet has reasonably private. Which it is. But it is not totally private.
So I am going to have to curb what I write a bit I think.

Why! You will still be the same poster?

soontobe Sat 24-Jan-15 18:47:03

ha ha ha!

Mishap Sat 24-Jan-15 18:41:01

loopylou Sat 24-Jan-15 18:38:33

Elegran Sat 24-Jan-15 18:33:12

Surely you are not this soontobe ? grin

soontobe Sat 24-Jan-15 18:09:02

grin

Mishap Sat 24-Jan-15 18:07:12

Soon - I know exactly who you are - it is very obvious from your username and the information that you have given. grin

soontobe Sat 24-Jan-15 17:58:35

Sorry about your second wife.

feetlebaum Sat 24-Jan-15 17:56:28

My second wife was a dancer, who got bored nine years after we met, and swanned off to the USA. She lived in Florida for a while but is now resident in Las Vegas... My neighbours are lovely - those to my left have been here longer than I have, and I arrived here 41 years ago...

No problem...

soontobe Sat 24-Jan-15 17:48:55

Ah. That is what others do? Ah.
I may leave it a month and do just that.

soontobe Sat 24-Jan-15 17:47:37

feetlebaum, you may not want to talk about your wife in any detail, your neighbours, your cousin etc.
I havent seen that.
Me on the other hand..

Go on then feetlebaum, spill.

loopylou Sat 24-Jan-15 17:46:17

That's a strange respond soontobe!
Only alternative is to ask to be totally removed and then rejoin with new 'name'??

soontobe Sat 24-Jan-15 17:44:06

No, I am not famous!

I meant the general public as in not gransnetters.

Ana, there is more than that. But never mind.

I wasnt trying to hide from gransnetters, that would be impossible in my case! Nor the church.

HQ have replied to my email.
They say they do not allow name changes on this site. Wish I had know n that before. I could have done with being a bit more discreet. If I stay on this site long enough, my whole life will be laid bare. hmm. Food for thought.

I dont understand. I had read before about jings name changes. So how did that happen?

feetlebaum Sat 24-Jan-15 17:42:22

We do seem to have become a somewhat paranoid nation...

Ana Sat 24-Jan-15 17:13:00

The only personal stuff you seem to have given is the fact that you're a Christian and that you have a number of children, soontobe.

Not sure how you think the general public is going to 'spot you' from that!

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 24-Jan-15 17:12:01

Are you known in your church as soontobe?

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 24-Jan-15 17:11:10

Are you famous in any way?

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 24-Jan-15 17:09:30

But GN is for the general public. ie us. confused how can your user name identify you?

soontobe Sat 24-Jan-15 16:55:04

Because I write quite personal stuff. So dont want to make it too easy to be spotted by the general public.
