absent Fri 27-Mar-15 19:50:09

As Gransnet has grown – it will shortly celebrate its fourth birthday – there has been an overlap, although not, of course, a duplication of names. We have a number of rose and katy variations, for example, and I, naturally, am particularly aware of the recent arrival of absentgrandma. Can I put in a plea for using a name that is distinctively identifiable when you are replying directly to a specific poster. I spent a lot of time this morning trawling through a very long thread looking for something I didn't remember posting which had sparked a somewhat acerbic response to absent. Eventually I tracked down the "offending" post which I hadn't made at all. I don't want to change my name as I have been absent here, as it were, for nearly four years and I wouldn't dream of expecting someone else to do so.

vampirequeen Sat 28-Mar-15 08:16:21

There can only ever be one Vampirequeen grin

Leticia Sat 28-Mar-15 08:25:17

Thanks Anya- I will keep that picture in mind! smile

ninathenana Sat 28-Mar-15 08:28:55

grumppa I confess to having omitted the second first 'p' on occasions. #hangsheadinshame
My kindle thinks your name should be granola grin

From, the one and only ( I think) nina grin

Anya Sat 28-Mar-15 08:29:27

Absent yes, I'm mixing my metaphors again! It was probably a Freudian slip as she did indeed have an amazing vocabulary and grasp of the vernacular grin

gillybob Sat 28-Mar-15 08:32:58

Leggings guilty as charged.

onesies you have got to be Joe King ! What do you take me for Absent?

actually don't answer that smile

rosequartz Sat 28-Mar-15 09:38:19

It's the War of the Roses then grin if having a trio of us confuses people!

Right - who was here first?

(I don't think it was me)

I like Leticia, I always think of a noble Roman lady.

glammanana Sat 28-Mar-15 09:56:57

I think somewhere along the line we have had another glamma but not too sure maybe a different spelling of sorts.smile
Also here leggings are the order of the day most days but please don't knock onesies too much as mine have kept me so cosy all winter and they are quite nice really, red with little black and white scottie dogs & cream fluffy one, just make sure hubby is home to answer the front door.

Falconbird Sat 28-Mar-15 10:01:06

My name is from a poem about a Falcon by Manley Hopkins - pretentious moi blush

I studied it at Poly and can still remember lots of it.

yogagran Sat 28-Mar-15 10:38:28

There's me and there's also yogagirl, very confusing sometimes
I've always had the same name from day one, right back when GN was new

granjura Sat 28-Mar-15 12:10:21

Well I am a Grand and I live in the Jura, so makes sense.

BTW how unique is your normal name? I know for sure that my name combination, first name, married name and maiden name is the only one in the world- which is kind of fun.

kittylester Sat 28-Mar-15 12:37:00

There are very few of the real me around. My first name is unusual and both my maiden name and married name are unusual in England. But, my BiL met and married woman who had a daughter who shared my first name and, eventually, he adopted the daughter so there are actually two of us in the same family!

nannieroz111 Sat 28-Mar-15 12:48:18

Leticia I had a friend at school called Letitia. She was nicknamed Letty. She was a lovely friend, we lost touch 50 years ago. Maybe she in a GNetter too!

Gagagran Sat 28-Mar-15 13:22:33

Before full blown dementia took my Mum she used to say "I'm going dotty" or "I must be going gaga" when she couldn't remember something. Hence my user name. It's in her memory.

rosequartz Sat 28-Mar-15 13:22:48

My married name is very normal and boring! which has made tracing DH's family tree difficult.
My maiden name was a bit more unusual as were many of the names in my family tree.

AshTree Sat 25-Apr-15 14:54:57

I don't think I've come across any similar usernames to mine. My RL married name is unusual, but having said that, my daughter found someone else with her first and surname when registering with hotmail many years ago, so she had to insert her middle initial too. She couldn't resist emailing her namesake and saying hello smile.

ninathenana Sat 25-Apr-15 15:49:39

I have never met anyone with my RL registered first name although I've read of one or two. I have always been known by middle name, I've never heard of anyone with that name.
My maiden surname and married surnames are both uncommon too.
Off to Google my names grin

hildajenniJ Sat 25-Apr-15 16:01:58

I would quite like to change my username. hildajennij is the first part of my email address, and I used it simply because I couldn't think of anything better at the time. Can you change it yourself, or do you have to go through GNHG? I can think of loads of good names now.

annsixty Sat 25-Apr-15 16:19:11

My first RL name is known of course,I didn't use any imagination with that, but my maiden surname and my married surname are so common that I have always felt very deprived.

Greyduster Sat 25-Apr-15 16:42:06

I chose my name as it is my favourite fishing fly - not because I am grey and I have been known, occasionally, to dust! If there were any other Greydusters, I have lots of other flies to choose from - for instance Woollybuggar (you may draw your own conclusions!)smile.

Katek Sat 25-Apr-15 22:48:14

My name is my middle name and the starting sound if my maiden name! My RL first name is very Scots but my surname is very, very unusual. There are only 9 of us in the UK and it's just one family. FIL, uncle, uncle's wife, DH, myself, DS, DdIL and two DGS's.

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 25-Apr-15 22:50:47

You should all pick sensible sounding names.

Ana Sat 25-Apr-15 22:51:37

grin

Jomarie Sat 25-Apr-15 22:55:22

Yeah right!

Katek Sat 25-Apr-15 23:13:43

But of course, Jingl!!

TriciaF Sun 26-Apr-15 10:02:45

My first name is Patricia, but I was only ever called that by Mum when she was cross with me. To family I'm Tricia, and people I know from work call me Pat, which I prefer because I had a lovely Auntie Pat.
